Marvel's The Punisher

Back in January we found out that Netflix and Marvel were developing a potential Daredevil spinoff series titled The Punisher, focusing of course on Frank Castle, who made his debut in the recently released Daredevil season two and was played by The Walking Dead star Jon Bernthal.

Today it’s been confirmed that this isn’t something that might happen anymore. It actually is happening. Netflix has officially ordered a full first season of the Punisher series, with Bernthal set to reprise his role as Castle. Hannibal writer and executive producer Steve Lightfoot will handle showrunner duties on The Punisher, while also writing the first two episodes and executive producing.

Season 2 Episode 13

Netflix
Premiere date: Friday, March 18th, 2016

So much has happened so far in Daredevil. I feel like Inigo Montoya in The Princess Bride; “Let me explain, no there is no time, let me sum up.” Karen (Deborah Ann Woll) accidentally figured out who The Blacksmith was, Frank’s former Colonel Ray Schoonover (Clancy Brown), but Frank (Jon Bernthal) interceded and followed his teacher’s advice, “one shot, one kill.” After dispatching him, he found a cache of military grade weaponry that reminded me of the wonderful scene in The Boondock Saints where the brothers arm themselves. Elektra (Elodie Yung) has been marked by Nobu (Peter Shinkoda) as the leader of The Hand; a job she resists by helping Daredevil and Stick fight them off. It’s time for the conclusion to season 2 of Daredevil, which is like the Super Bowl in that it’s exciting but there’s a sense of melancholy that after this, something you love will be gone for long time…

Daredevil Now ‘Risk-Averse Angel’ After Born Again Conversion

Daredevil, Volume 1: Devil at Bay

In a development so stunning it made me drop a cup of coffee on my foot this morning, Daredevil – the self-proclaimed nocturnal protector of Hell’s Kitchen (the neighborhood in New York, not the cooking show with that perpetually angry British dude) – has revealed that he has become a born again Christian and will no longer battle crime as Daredevil.

“I can no longer continue my fight against the criminal element of this city while dressed as a poorly-attired minion of the dark lord Satan,” Daredevil said to the assembled press early this morning. “I am now….Risk-Averse Angel!”

This season… just unreal. I can’t think of a show outside of Dexter seasons 1-4 where every episode is better than the last. After the first half of the season, Daredevil had the hallway/staircase fight, the introduction of the incredibly sexy Elektra (Elodie Yung), and the balls to the wall insanity of Frank “the Punisher” Castle (Jon Bernthal). The second half of the season has more than kept up. The Hand has taken over as the primary villainous force, and Vincent D’Onofrio is back as Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk. And since season 2 has been stealing the thunder, all the greatest hits from season 1 are returning – Stick (Scott Glenn); Daredevil’s blind trainer, and Nobu, the ninja that nearly killed Matt last season. My mouth has continuously hit the floor, and I’m so close to the end that I’m starting to get upset at the thought of waiting a year for season 3.

Daredevil season 2 debuted a week before Batman V Superman is set to hit theaters, and while the TV superhero shows were on a brief hiatus. The definition of perfect timing, Daredevil is the talk of the watercooler, and with Netflix uploading shows all at once, the binger will have no crossover effect. And binge you should, because this is an absolutely epic season. Every time I think I’ve seen far and away the best episode, the next one starts and it’s a whole new level of “Holy Shit” and “Oh My God” and “Are you kidding me!?” We left off with The Punisher awaiting trial for his murders and Elektra causing all sorts of personal and professional issues for Matt “Daredevil” Murdock…

The arrest of Wilson Fisk left a power vacuum in Hell’s Kitchen. As Irish gang members meet to try to fill it, they are interrupted, to put it mildly, by a military style assault leaving all but one dead. Turns out, someone is hunting down gangs and street scum in the neighborhood. Sgt. Mahoney (Royce Johnson) even jokes that some cops think this mysterious gunman is making their lives easier. He even has a nickname… The Punisher.

Interview: ‘Daredevil’ Season 2 Composer John Paesano

Composer John Paesano

Last year, Marvel’s Daredevil surprised audiences, surpassing even the highest expectations of jaded comic fans and skeptical TV critics alike. All were blown away by its realistic, nuanced approach to the superhero vigilante serial drama, bolstered by a roster of amazing performances, pitch-perfect writing, and action choreography that could stand toe-to-toe with any big budget film. Still, one of the most notable and memorable aspects of the series was something many viewers take for granted (and most TV dramas these days all but forego) — the opening credit sequence.

Written by award-winning DreamWorks Dragons and Maze Runner film composer, John Paesano, that haunting opening theme was only the first hint of what the show had in store. Pulsing, rhythmic, tonal, yet brimming with emotion, Paesano’s Daredevil score stands apart in a world filled with brassy superhero anthems.

On the verge of the second season release, I had the privilege of talking with John over the phone about his return to Daredevil in season 2, his early experiences as a fledgling composer, his creative process, and geeky obsessions.

Premiere date: Friday, March 18th, 2016

Finally, Marvel returns to Netflix with Season 2 of Daredevil. Debuting last year, the 13-episode series, uploaded all at once on the streaming site, put to death terrible memories of the unimpressive Ben Affleck film version. The new Daredevil (Charlie Cox), is blind lawyer Matt Murdock, who along with his best buddy Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) and victim turned associate Karen (Deborah Ann Woll), run a law firm to help the underprivileged in Hell’s Kitchen. Murdock was blinded as a boy and the chemicals that blinded him also enhanced his other senses to the extreme. After a season long battle with Mob “Kingpin” Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), Murdock finally went from blindfolded ninja costume to the red suited Man With No Fear himself in the season finale. The series received rave reviews from critics and fans and with the series being on Netflix it was allowed to take its time over the 13-episodes whereas a film is forced to squeeze everything into 90-120 minutes. The show’s success launched a future Marvel Netflix empire, as Jessica Jones starring Krysten Ritter was already a huge hit last year, and there are other series slated such as Luke Cage and Iron Fist. The storyline going into season 2 of Daredevil is, who will take over Wilson Fisk’s spot as top crime boss?

Spoilers for the first three episodes below.

‘Daredevil’ Season 2 Featurette “Daredevil & The Punisher” (Video)

Daredevil Season 2 "Daredevil & Punisher" Featurette

It’s one of the ultimate comic book debates: should a hero be willing to kill the bad guys for the greater good, or simply thwart their plans as many times as necessary? Many heroes, such as Batman, adhere to a code in which they nobly refuse to kill anyone, no matter how evil. And yet some villains, such as Joker (going back to Batman), have killed numerous innocent people, and continue to do so after escaping the capture of our so very noble hero again and again and again. Should the Dark Knight make an exception in this case, or should he stay true? There will never be a right answer; it will always be disputed.

Another noble hero is the title character in Netflix’s Daredevil, as he proved many times in season one of the series. But in season two of the series, he meets someone more than willing to end the lives of those he deems worthy of deletion from existence, The Punisher, who puts it bluntly: “I do the one thing that you can’t. You hit ’em and they get back up. I hit ’em and they stay down.”

A new featurette titled “Daredevil & Punisher” has been released examining the two characters, with insight from the actors behind the characters, Charlie Cox and Jon Bernthal. You can check out the video below.
