Dark Universe title card

Shared universes can be a tough sell nowadays, especially now since they can be perceived as derivative. However, if a studio puts the right creative minds together, these shared universes can be very successful.

Universal Pictures will take their first steps into launching their own starting with a reboot of The Mummy. And they are confident enough in their monsters filled universe that they have announced that the series of films reviving the studio’s classic characters for a new generation will be known as their “Dark Universe.” More on the story below.

Universal's The Mummy

Sometimes explorers should just leave ancient temples be. But where’s the fun in that? We’ve all heard the story before of an ancient evil being unleashed on accident, on purpose, or just because someone is curious. It’s all been done before. But for Universal’s reboot of The Mummy, it’s a little bit different. That’s because it’s a part of a dark universe of monsters.

In the film’s final action-packed trailer we see Tom Cruise being attacked by ancient monsters and hurled out of vehicles. All the while, audiences will “Witness The Beginning of a Dark Universe.” Check out the final trailer below.

Universal Monsters

Given the popularity of superhero shared universes, studios are trying to snatch up properties in hopes of mimicking their box office success. So it is easy to see why some would dismiss one of the newest shared universes, Universal’s Classic Monsters universe.

Sure, Alex Kurtzman’s The Mummy may be the beginning of a Universal Monsters shared universe with Dr. Jekyll (Russell Crowe) being the rumored thread that ties it all together, but producer Chris Morgan says upcoming remakes of The Wolfman, The Invisible Man, Bride of Frankenstein, Van Helsing, Creature from the Black Lagoon, etc, won’t be anything like what’s being done over at Marvel Studios or WB’s DC Films. Check out what he had to say below.

WB DC films Justice League team first look

Warner Bros.’ DC Extended Universe got off to a rocky start. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad has given the vast majority the confidence the franchise needs to believe that it can compete with Marvel Studios. Still, early reactions to Wonder Woman have given us some assurance that there can be a decent DCEU film. James Wan is behind the lens for Aquaman. And despite some of the creative fallout, The Batman seems to be headed in the right direction now that Matt Reeves is the director.

Now there is word that Warner Bros. wants to start shooting a DC film this year. With The Batman set for a possible 2018 shoot, the rumor is that the studio has narrowed it down to five possible choices. Check out which film it could be here below.
