NYCHFF 2016 Logo

For the 14th straight year, the New York City Horror Film Festival (NYCHFF) opened last night. Started by the late Michael J. Hein, the NYCHFF is the largest and most recognized film festival to deal solely in the horror and sci-fi genres. It is running through Sunday, November 13th at the Cinepolis Chelsea, 260 West 23rd Street, in Manhattan. The festival screens approximately 50-60 films each year, welcomes horror legends, and honors the best work with an award ceremony. After a fairly disappointing week, I showed up last night to take in six (!) total horror films: two very good feature films, and four incredible shorts.

Check it out below.

Horror is a genre that lends itself to anthology probably better than any; whether it be short story compilations from the greats of the genre, from Lovecraft and Poe, to Barker and King, or classic cinematic anthologies like Trilogy of Terror and Tales From the Crypt. These have paved the way for a new generation of short story style scare films. Collections like Trick ‘r Treat (2007), and the more recent V/H/S and ABC’s of Death series have provided fans of blood and gore a wealth of fun times. If you’re a fan of any of those above mentioned films, then Tales of Halloween is definitely worth your time and money.

Netflix Review: 11-11-1111-11-11: The Prophecy

DVD
Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman
Starring Timothy Gibbs, Michael Landes, Wendy Glenn
Big Air Studios
Originally Released: November 11, 2011

Since I was 23, the time stamp of “4:44” keeps coming up and recurring in my life. I have no idea whether this has any relevance or not, but it’s something I’ve noticed frequently, and as a result I often get attracted to stories surrounding the concept of meanings behind significant numerological synchronicities. 11-11-11: The Prophecy is one such film, and surveys this concept in greater detail than many other stories have.

Written and directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, best known for his contributions to the Saw series, 11-11-11 (not to be confused with the ‘mockbuster’ with the rip-off name of 11/11/11 — the movie with the correct title uses dashes instead of slashes) explores in elaborate depth the nature of synchronicity, numerology, and its relation to imagery and prophecy. The concept lends itself very strongly to the horror genre, and comes across brilliantly.

Written by Darren Lynn Bousman
Starring Timothy Gibbs, Michael Landes, Wendy Glenn, Lolo Herrero
Capacity Pictures/Big Air
DVD Release Date: April 24, 2012

Written and directed by Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, Repo! The Genetic Opera), 11-11-11: The Prophecy is a supernatural horror film that feels more like a date-based gimmick than an actual storyline.

At 11:11PM on the 11th day of the 11th month, an entity from another world will enter the earthly realm through Heaven’s 11th gate.

Got all that? OK, so let’s focus on the ‘plot’ of the film that attempts to fill in all the gaps between the the ominous synchronicity of 11-11-11. After the death of his wife and child, Joseph Crone (Timothy Gibbs) travels to Barcelona to visit his estranged brother (Michael Landes) and dying father.

Spoiler Talk: 11-11-11

Movie poster 11-11-11Pseudo-religious twaddle and apocalyptic bombast are both the baloney and the cheese in the latest mediocrity sandwich from director Darren Lynn Bousman, 11-11-11. The ads trumpet Bousman as the director of Saw 2, 3, and 4, though we’re not sure why anyone would admit directing Saw 4. You can be sure that 11-11-11 will disappear from theaters faster than it takes to change the date to 11-12, and since Bousman also wrote this yawner disguised as a horror film, he has only himself to blame.

Then again, what else can you expect from a movie based on a date?

Throughout the movie’s (thankfully) scant 80-minute running time, I was reminded of that horribly laughable Nic Cage Wicker Man remake and that just plain horrible Winona Ryder snoozer Lost Souls. 11-11-11 is neither better nor worse than those two, just equally bad.

‘Saw’ Director Darren Lynn Bousman To Direct ‘Abattoir’

Abattoir

Darren Lynn Bousman, who is best known for directing Saw II, Saw III, Saw IV, and Repo! The Genetic Opera, is now officially set to direct Abattoir. The movie will be based on a Radical Publishing comic miniseries by Bousman and his writing/producing partner Michael Peterson.

Considering the miniseries isn’t out yet, not too much is known of the premise aside fore the synopsis below and what Bousman has to say about it — both included below. What we do know, is that it will be some kind of a haunted house story, and those are always fun. That paired with the sick and twisted brain of Darren Lynn Bousman means that this could be one to watch for by both comic book and movie horror fans alike.

Here’s what Bousman had to say about the project:

I am addicted to haunted house stories. I love them… My addiction to this genre became an obsession to create one of my own. Abattoir is my spin on a haunted house story.

Repo! The Genetic Opera
DVD
Starring Alexa Vega, Paul Sorvino, Anthony Stewart Head
Written by Darren Smith & Terrance Zdunich
Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman
Lionsgate Home Entertainment
Release Date: January 20, 2009

If you are in the mood for a slasher-esque feature tied together with a rock-opera theme, look no further than Repo! The Genetic Opera. Originally an actual rock opera, it attracted a cult following that caught the eye of Lionsgate Pictures and was turned into a full blown movie.

The film/opera takes place in the dark dystopian future where death and other physical ailments are an easy fix. Genetic company Genco can provide you with extra spare parts needed to survive this cold soulless future as long as you have the cash. But whatever you do, do not try to stiff Genco on the bill. Otherwise, they might just send a repo man in a hazemat suit to repossess these organs, spilling your guts in the process.

Check back soon for your chance to win Repo! The Genetic Opera
on DVD or Blu-ray from Geeks of Doom!

Darren Lynn Bousman Won’t Be Doing ‘Leprechaun’

Leprechaun

Director Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, III, IV) was quoted by MTV saying that he wanted to do a new Leprechaun movie, which would take the title character to the Old West.

Now Bousman, who recently directed Repo! The Genetic Opera, has posted to his MySpace blog to clear up the situation.

Here’s the original quote from MTV:

I would do Leprechaun in a second. If Lionsgate is listening, give me Leprechaun. It’s just one of those fun popcorn movies. I would love to bring back the fun popcorn movie — extreme violence, extreme absurdity — but make it fun. [Where would he go?] Back to the old west; you send him in a time machine and transport him to the old west. There are gold rushes. There are gunfights. It’s awesome! I have the whole thing already worked out!
