Megadeth Dystopia Album Cover

Megadeth
Dystopia
MP3 | CD | Vinyl
Label: T-Boy Records/UMe
Release date: January 22, 2016

After 20 or so years of churning out several mediocre (at best) albums, Dave Mustaine and company are back with their fifteenth studio album Dystopia. There has once again been a major shakeup in the Megadeth lineup as both guitarist Chris Broderick and drummer Shawn Drover exited the band in the wake of the previous album, 2013’s abysmal Super Collider. The two musicians continue to play together in a new band known as Act of Defiance. Their replacements are former Angra guitarist Kiko Loureiro and drummer Chris Adler who is pulling double duty with both Megadeth and his own band Lamb of God.

Metallica No Life 'til Leather demo lineup James Hetfield, Ron McGovney, Lars Ulrich, Dave Mustaine

No Life ’til leather, we’re gonna kick some ass tonight…

So says Metallica, on “Hit The Lights,” the opening track of their 1982 demo No Life ’til Leather, which, after over three decades, is finally getting an official release for this year’s Record Store Day.

The mighty Metallica will be releasing the 1982 demo No Life ’til Leather as a re-mastered limited edition cassette tape for Record Store Day this April. This offering will contain the original demo recordings for the seven songs that went on to make up the bulk of the thrash metal legends’ first album, 1983’s Kill ‘Em All, including the popular “Seek & Destroy.” The demo tracks were performed by the band’s original line-up of James Hetfield (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Lars Ulrich (drums); Dave Mustaine (lead guitar), who went on to form fellow Big 4 thrash band Megadeth; and Ron McGovney (bass). (For Kill ‘Em All, current guitarist Kirk Hammett replaced Mustaine, while Cliff Burton, who died in 1986, stepped in as bassist).

The limited edition Record Store Day demo tape release will have a re-mastered version of the original 1982 mix, and this will be the first time the demo is being offered commercially ever.

See cassette art and track listing here below (image above is of the aforementioned original line-up, but is not an official photo for the limited edition cassette release and was not included in the press release).

Thrashback Thursday: Megadeth “Crush ‘Em”

Megadeth Risk Era Band Photo

Today’s Thrashback Thursday theme is: great band, cool song, terrible record. Megadeth‘s anthemic track “Crush ‘Em” was just about the only redeeming factor of their otherwise abysmal 1999 album Risk. The record’s title reflects Megadeth leader Dave Mustaine’s belief that the band was ready to take a risk and step outside of their comfort zone. The problem was that the step they took was toward pop metal and the risk that they took alienated many fans. The album would be the last to feature legendary guitarist Marty Friedman, who left the fold a year later.

“Crush ‘Em” was also used as the theme song for the equally terrible Jean Claude Van Damme and Bill Goldberg movie Universal Soldier: The Return and the song’s official video features both actors.

Megadeth Rust In Peace Band Photo

This week’s edition of Thrashback Thursday examines one of the genre’s pioneering bands. After Dave Mustaine was booted from Metallica for his drug and alcohol abuse, he roared back with the unrelenting thrash assault that is Megadeth.

From their 1990 juggernaut album Rust in Peace, this is “Holy Wars… The Punishment Due.” Watch it below.

Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine To Audience: ‘Obama Staged Aurora, Sikh Temple Shootings’

Dave Mustaine

During a recent Megadeth concert in Singapore, frontman Dave Mustaine went full tilt goo-goo for Satan when he asserted to a confused crowd that U.S. President Barack Obama staged the tragic shootings in both Aurora, Colorado and at The Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in Oak Creek. This, according to Mustaine, was so that the President could justify a ban on guns. In the video taken from the concert, which you can watch below, Mustaine expressly states that the President planned these murders.

“Back in my country, my President is trying to pass a gun ban so he’s staging all these murders like the Fast and Furious thing down at the border and Aurora, Colorado, and all the people who were killed there and now the beautiful people at the Sikh temple.”

Mustaine goes on to say that he doesn’t know where he’s going to live if “America keeps going the way it’s going,” stating the the country is “turning into Nazi America.” The crowd appears to disagree with Mustaine judging from the tone of its roar, which included a few boos. One audience member can even be heard shouting, “Hey, we love America!” Mustaine’s response to the crowd’s reaction: “Be quiet.”

So let’s dissect Mustaine’s claims with a few facts, lest anyone out there get the idea that these remarks are anything other than completely deranged.

Megadeth Rust In Peace

This week, Megadeth’s Rust In Peace is on sale in MP3 format for only $2.99.

The 1990 album is, in my opinion, is Megadeth’s best (beating out Peace Sells by a very thin margin), and contains some of their most popular songs, like “Holy Wars…The Punishment Due,” and “Hanger 18,” along with some of my favorites from the band, “Take No Prisoners,” “Tornado Of Souls,” and “Rust In Peace…Polaris.”

This album is sooooo damn good, please, do yourself a favor and cough up the three bucks, it’s so worth it. Rust In Peace is also available on CD, and as a live concert DVD and Blu-ray.

GOP Seeks Headbanger For President; Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine Answers The Call

Dave Mustaine announces presidential bid

Disgusted with the rich empty suits currently in the running, the Republican Party is now looking to the world of heavy metal for the right candidate to put up as leader of the free world. RNC Chairman Reinhold Reince Priebus was quoted today, April 1, 2012, as saying, “We like Ted Nugent because he’s into guns and stuff, but Dave Mustaine is really the perfect combination of extremist vitriol and worldwide appeal. I mean, Megadeth is really popular in other countries, so it’s like a no-brainer.”

The guitar-wielding wildly-maned Mustaine responded immediately to the call of duty by putting in his bid for election. “Well it’s about fucking time the world sees what greatness I have to offer it,” the Megadeth frontman said. “I mean, America would be so lucky to have me as President because I’m the only one who knows what the fuck is really going on around here.”

What If The Big 4 Metal Tour Was The Big 8?

The Big 4

Metal Sucks posed a question this week: If The Big Four were The Big 8, which bands would be the next four in the group?

If you’re unaware, The Big 4 Tour is comprised of thrash metal giants Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax. The tour is scheduled to arrive in just one city this April in the United States, much to the dismay of metalheads across the nation who wanted the tour to hit more cities.

I’ve seen some reactions from fans who aren’t in total agreement with this touring line-up, stating that not every band on the bill fits the “Big 4” mold. I happened to think it’s a great bill, but I’ve wondered what other bands would fit nicely on this tour.

So, if The Big 4 Tour was actually The Big 8 Tour, what four additional bands do you think deserve to be on it?

Check out my picks below and let me know what yours would be.
