This time around the season will include 10 brand new episodes, and they may be arriving sooner than you think: the plan is to begin filming this summer, for a premiere either in late 2017 or sometime in 2018.

Crowds rushed into the Main Stage room at New York Comic-Con on Saturday, filling up the auditorium for a chance to see David Duchovny (Fox Mulder), Mitch Pileggi (Walter Skinner), and show creator Chris Carter speak about the upcoming The X-Files mini-series revival.

The panel’s moderator, Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley), came onto the stage first and announced that the audience would be treated to “the first episode of season 10,” to an eruption of cheers. “Afterwards,” Nanjiani said, “I’m going to speak with some people involved with the show — and my goal will be not to cry. But, before the episode airs, we have a special guest on the screen who’d like to say a word.” Gillian Anderson then appeared on the screen, telling the fans to enjoy the premiere.

The X-Files David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson

In January it was reported that Fox was pondering bringing back some its hit shows like Prison Break, 24 (which has already been brought back once for the limited series 24: Live Another Day), and The X-Files. And yet again, no word on Firefly—even a limited series return of the Joss Whedon series would surely send fans into a frenzy.

Today comes word that at least one of those shows is indeed coming back. Fox has ordered a new limited series run of The X-Files, with show stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson set to reprise their roles and show creator Chris Carter also returning.

The X-Files

Fox heads Dana Walden and Gary Newman recently talked about some old favorite series that could be getting resurrected in the future.

Shows the duo have revealed they’re interested in reviving are The X-Files, the science fiction-horror series that starred David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, Prison Break, and 24. While more 24 will come as no great shock—the series just completed a successful 12-episode limited event return this past summer—the next run could be without Jack Bauer, played of course by Kiefer Sutherland.
