David Fincher almost directed Star Wars Episode VII

Because if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Gone Girl director David Fincher and star Ben Affleck are going to reunite for a modern adaptation of a Alfred Hitchcock novel with a twist. The team will be working on a remake of Strangers on a Train, but the film will simply be called Strangers.

Word is that Gillian Flynn, who wrote the script for Gone Girl as well as the book it’s based on, will pen the Strangers script. But the idea of setting the film in a train may be a bit outdated, so according to Deadline, the film will be contemporary and fit for a modern day audience. Hit the jump for more.

Gone Girl Movie Review

Gone Girl

Screenwriter: Gillian Flynn
Cast: Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, Carrie Coon, Kim Dickens, Patrick Fugit
20th Century Fox
Rated R | 149 Minutes

Love is the world’s infinite mutability; lies, hatred, murder even, are all knit up in it; it is the inevitable blossoming of its opposites, a magnificent rose smelling faintly of blood.” – Tony Kushner, The Illusion

Directed by David Fincher, Gone Girl is based on the 2012 novel by Gillian Flynn, who also wrote the screenplay. A dark, ominous mystery-thriller, Gone Girl fits perfectly within Fincher’s stylized oeuvre, which includes modern masterpieces like Se7en, The Game, Fight Club, and Zodiac.

On the morning of his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) discovers that his wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike), is missing. Under pressure from the police and a growing media frenzy, Nick’s portrait of a perfect marriage begins to disintegrate. Soon his lies, deceits, and erratic behavior have everyone asking, “Did Nick Dunne kill his wife?”

David Fincher almost directed Star Wars Episode VII

Before J.J. Abrams got the gig to direct Star Wars: Episode VII, there were many other directors on the rumored short list, from Brad Bird, Andrew Stanton, and Jon Favreau to Zack Snyder, Joss Whedon, and Guillermo Del Toro. Fan speculation and the Internet only fueled the rumor mill. Even Rian Johnson was one of the frontrunners, that is, until he got the job to direct Episode VIII and Episode IX. There were so many names, but Disney ultimately decided to let Abrams direct, with Johnson directing the final two episodes of the trilogy.

Now that Abrams is already months into production for Episode VII‘s December 2015 release, Gone Girl‘s David Fincher is talking about how he was close to directing the highly anticipated sequel. Hit the jump to see what he had to say about not accepting the offer to direct Episode VII.

House Of Cards – Season One on Netflix

House Of Cards: Season OneHouse Of Cards: Season One
Netflix
Directed by David Fincher, James Foley, Joel Schumacher, Charles McDougall, Carl Franklin, Carl Franklin
Starring Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright, Kate Mara, Corey Stoll, Michael Kelly, Sakina Jaffrey, Kristen Connolly, Michael Gill, Soledad O’Brien
Netflix
Originally Released: February 1, 2013

Although Netflix had already taken a step into original series with Lilyhammer, it is with House of Cards that they have positioned a deep (though safe, in my mind) gamble in the belief that streaming is not just the way of the future, that it is already here. And that their customer base is already aware of this. And who among our audience doesn’t agree with this?

I dare you to defy my call on this, because seriously – I’ve lost count of the amount of conversations with fellow geeks that have spoken of the hours of sleepless nights they’ve self-induced to finish a season of Doctor Who or Star Trek or The Office or The IT Crowd, or a franchise of movies. Netflix knows that their fans and followers soak up an entire season in a day or maybe two. Who the hell needs sleep anyway?

David Fincher’s ‘20,000 Leagues Under The Sea’ May Take Production To Australia; Brad Pitt Probably Won’t Star [Updated]

David Fincher

When last we heard about David Fincher‘s 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, Disney decided to put the film on hold for financial reasons. John Carter was a huge blow to the live-action department causing Disney to draft some new plans for some of their other riskier live-action films. Not even the casting of Brad Pitt or an “older A-list star” could convince them to move forward with the project.

There was a three-month production pause for the film when Disney decided to pull back on the project. During that time, Andrew Kevin Walker polished the Steven Zallian draft. Now that we are past the three-month pause, there is still no word on when Disney can give Fincher the go ahead to produce the film.

House of CardsHouse of Cards
Created by David Fincher
Starring Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright
Available exclusively on Netflix

Netflix shook the world of traditional TV up with their original programming announcements in a similar way to the way iTunes first shook up the music industry with its new paradigm for enjoying our favorite tunes. Of several projects announced by the streaming movie/TV rental company, the most high profile was House of Cards, a series headlined by Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright and produced/directed by David Fincher.

The series is based on a novel and a British miniseries of the same name. Season one of the show launched on Netflix last week, giving us our first real look (other than Lillyhammer, which was a much smaller project) at the new way we can expect to consume long form scripted media.
