DC Universe Online
Sony Online Entertainment
PlayStation 3/PC
Price: $59.99 with a $14.99 monthly subscription
Released January 11th, 2011

DC Universe Online is not the first superhero Massively Multiplayer Online RPG to be released, but it is the first to have a major license behind it and it has been widely anticipated by its audience. Thanks to this game, players have the chance to fight alongside some of their favorite characters as well as interact with other fans. The game doesn’t stray too far from the formula perfected by World of Warcraft, which is a good thing, because the setting is really the selling point of the game. Never before have players been able to explore a living, breathing DC universe in this way. However, the game is not without its flaws, and those looking to check it out may want to wait a few weeks while the inevitable bugs are worked out of the system.

The story sets up the flavor of the DC universe right from the start. Lex Luthor has traveled from a future in which he has defeated Superman, but met defeat at the hands of Brainiac. He has traveled back in time and released those most precious of plot devices, nanobots, into the atmosphere in order to turn ordinary people (the player) into an army of superheroes that can defeat Braniac. It doesn’t take a masters degree in DC history to keep up, but a lot of the fun of the game is seeing your favorite DC heroes and villains brought to life and fighting beside them. It also helps to know some of the creators behind the books, as many of the locations are named after famous writers, artists, and editors.

Week of Geek: San Diego Comic Con International 2010

Those looking forward to DC Universe: Online got a good look at the game on Saturday at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con as the first teaser trailer was shown for the game. The trailer showed Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, and Cyborg taking on Cersei, The Joker, Harley Quinn, Black Adam, and Lex Luther in a battle in a bombed out city. After some fantastic action, Superman flies in to save the day, only to find out he’s too late, as Brainiac shows up with an invasion. We then learn that everything we have just seen has been in the future, and we then see Lex Luther go back in time to hopefully spread the power that will enable players to create their own heroes.

Those at the panel were lucky enough to gain VIP codes to access the beta for the game, which will go live on November 2nd. Other things discussed at the panel were the voice cast, which includes Mark Hamill as the Joker, Kevin Conroy as Batman, Adam Baldwin as Superman, James Marsters as Lex Luthor, and Gina Torres as Wonder Woman. The inclusion of Conroy and Hamill is sure to please a lot of fans of Batman: The Animated Series.

DCU Online: E3 Sizzle Teaser Trailer

DCU Online posted a brand new teaser trailer on their Facebook page Saturday that will be featured at the upcoming E3 conference.

This new trailer focuses on a fan not having the experiences of “being born on Krypton” or “inheriting a fortune,” but having the desire to be in that universe. And with the Fall release of DCU Online’s MMORPG, fans and gamers will have the experience to do just that.

This trailer is the first real teaser that we have seen from the company regarding games, but it complements the previous character and territory spotlights including the recent video of Suicide Slums. More information is expected at this month’s E3 conference, so expect to see more from us in the near future.

This game is set to release this November courtesy of WB Games, DC Entertainment, and Sony Online Entertainment, and if anyone is interested, my PSN name is MK2Fac3, and I’ll be in Gotham City when this game is released, so come find me.

SDCC 09: DCU Online Pre Alpha – Instances, Achievements And Costumes
space

An updated version of DCU Online — DCUO — pre alpha demo was available to all attendees at the San Diego Comic-Con, showing vast changes to the version shown at the event during the previous year. Some of the more recognizable features plucked elements from both World of Warcraft and City of Heroes, yet adapting them to improve the user experience, at least in concept, anyway.

It’s impossible to know until a beta version is released since so much of a good MMO (Massively Multi-Player Online) game relies on the entire experience. The developers seem to understand this concept and they’ve done a hell of a job integrating the 70-plus year history of the DC Universe into the recognizable elements of an MMO. I’ve listed a few notable occurrences from the revised demo at Comic-Con…

High Level “Instances”
It’s nearly impossible not to refer to the epic battle areas of an MMO that requires a load screen as anything but “Instance” — as they’re called in WoW. That’s the term DCUO Creative Director Jens Andersen used when describing the high-level battle areas that will take the form of classic DC Comics landmarks like S.T.A.R. Labs. But while WoW makes their Instances disposable after achieving higher character levels, I don’t know that DCUO will want to do the same.

NYCC 09: Sneak Peek Of DC’s ‘DC Universe Online’ MMORPG

Geeks of Doom Invade New York Comic Con 2009DC Comics debut a sneak peek today at their new Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG), DC Universe Online at New York Comic Con 2009. The game will be released for Windows on the PC and Sony Playstation 3 and hasn’t even release an alpha version. Developers did, however, set up a demo that allowed fans to play with the game’s mechanics.

There seems to be a premium placed on speed and traveling, which differ depending on the character’s build. Characters also have more interaction with the world around them such as picking up passing cars and launch them across a city block.

Geeks of Doom Invade New York Comic Con 2009; A Call For Reader Questions

Geeks of Doom Invade New York Comic Con 2009With the New York Comic Con just around the corner, Geeks of Doom is poised to cover the convention for readers and provide wall to wall coverage of the event. I will be manning the convention floor providing video coverage of the event but, loyal readers, I need your help.

I am planning to do video interviews with various comic artists, writers, and just about anyone who wants to do an interview with me. Here are some of the interviewees I have lined up so far: Artist Khoi Pham , Artist Mitch Breitweiser, Southpeak Games, Atari, DC universe online (possible interviews with Jim Lee, Geoff Johns, and mystery guest), the cast of Dead Like Me and S. Darko.. and more.

So this is where you folks come in: I am going to come prepared with a bunch of questions but I thought, maybe some of our readers have some questions for our interviewees. Do you want to know something about the Atari’s upcoming Ghostbusters game? Want to know more about Southpeak’s Velvet Assassin? We’re giving you a chance to ask these questions! Just drop Geeks of Doom a line at (clickable linky). Please make sure you label in the subject line as NYCC 09 Question.

Ask any question you want for any one of the guests on the NYCC roster and I will do my best to track them down and have them answer it. (I seriously will do that if the question is good enough, I have no shame so I can definitely go up to a person and ask them a question.)

I should have more interviewees soon, so send in those questions!
