Dimebag Darrell Abbott R.I.P.

No surprise here: One of the coolest dudes that ever lived had one of the coolest houses and a killer home studio. Ten years after the senseless murder of Pantera and Damageplan guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, Guitar World is giving fans a glimpse inside his house and home recording studio.

The grounds are like a time capsule, appearing not to have been touched since Dime last walked out of the place. Highlights of the video include a tour of the guitar vault and a look at the original styrofoam cutout that the man himself made for the prototype shape of his signature Dean guitars. We even get a look inside the home’s Slayer-themed “Slaytanic Shitter” bathroom.

It’s a rare glimpse inside the private world of one of metal’s most revered legends and a must-see for any fan. Check it out here below.

Dimebag Darrell Abbott R.I.P.

Pantera was indisputably the most massive metal band of the ’90s, carrying the torch of metal through the grunge years and carving out a sound that was all their own. Today, on the 10th anniversary of the senseless murder of guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott at the hands of a deranged fan, we salute the force of nature that was Pantera and remember a fallen brother. Forget your tears and moments of silence, today we throw back a drink and crank this shit up, because that’s the way that Dime would’ve wanted it.

Check out the first single from Pantera’s final studio album, Reinventing The Steel. This is “Revolution Is My Name.”

Pantera Far Beyond Driven

A two-disc 20th Anniversary Edition of Pantera‘s Far Beyond Driven will be released by Rhino on March 25, 2014, and is available for pre-order now.

The album, which was the band’s seventh studio offering, debuted in 1994 at #1 on the Billboard chart — an amazing feat for a metal record — and then stayed on the chart for seven more months. Following in the crushing aural assault of their previous record, 1992’s Vulgar Display of Power, Far Beyond Driven contains the standout tracks “I’m Broken,” “5 Minutes Alone,” “Strength Beyond Strength,” “Becoming,” and a cover of Black Sabbath’s Planet Caravan all performed by singer Philip Anselmo, guitarist Dimebag Darrell, bassist Rex Brown, and drummer Vinnie Paul.

Pantera - The Best of Pantera: Far Beyond the Great Southern Cowboys' Vulgar Hits!

This month Pantera’s The Best of Pantera: Far Beyond the Great Southern Cowboys’ Vulgar Hits! is available as part of Amazon’s mammoth 1000 MP3s for $5 each deal.

It’s hard to overstate Pantera’s influence on the heavy metal landscape. Phil Anselmo’s harsh, aggressive vocals bouncing on Dimebag Darrell’s razor-sharp guitar licks all riding on bassist Rex Brown and drummer Vinnie Paul’s impossibly heavy groove gave metal a much needed kick up the you-know-what. They originally began as a glam metal band (good luck finding those first four albums), but it was their work of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s that warrants your attention on The Best of Pantera: Far Beyond the Great Southern Cowboys’ Vulgar Hits! including tracks such as “Cowboys From Hell,” “Mouth For War,” “5 Minutes Alone,” and “Revolution Is My Name.”

Browse all 1,000 albums on sale this month for only $5 each, as well as several albums on sale this week for only $2.99 each.

‘Dimebag’ Darrell: 7th Anniversary Of Pantera Guitarist’s Death

Former Pantera and Damageplan guitarist ‘Dimebag’ Darrell died 7 years ago today. His murder was a story which shocked the whole rock and metal music world.

Born Darrell Abbott on August 20, 1966 in Ennis, Texas, he formed the heavy metal band Pantera with his brother Vinnie Paul on drums in 1981. Finally settling on a line up encompassing lead singer Phil Anselmo and bass player Rex Brown, Pantera began as a glam metal band before changing their plan of attack with their seminal heavy metal album Cowboys From Hell in 1991.

Gracing the cover along with Dio and Steele are Paul Gray (Slipnot), The Rev (Avenged Sevenfold), Dimebag Darrell (Pantera), Cliff Burton (Metallica), Kurt Cobain (Nirvana), Randy Rhoads (Ozzy Osbourne), Freddy Mercury (Queen), and Layne Staley (Alice In Chains).

The cover painting also appears inside the magazine as a free poster. Check out the cover image here at right (click for larger, full view).

The issue is on newsstands now, but you can also purchase it online for $19.95, which includes a commemorative limited-edition 1 3/4″–diameter Dimebag Darrell “dime” along with an antiqued metal coin holder. MP3 Deal: Pantera’s ‘Vulgar Display Of Power’

The MP3 deal of the day over at Amazon today is Pantera‘s Vulgar Display Of Power for only $2.99.

Here’s where I explain to you why you should part with three bucks: This album is fucking amazing. That’s right, I cursed for emphasis, and I’d do it again… fucking amazing. There’s not one bad song on the whole album, but here’s three songs that are worth the $2.99 alone: “Mouth For War,” “Walk,” and “This Love.” There, done.

Like metal? [And you don’t already own this album? :::gasp:::] Vulgar Display of Power is a must-have in your collection.

Pantera was a four-piece metal band from Texas whose 1990 crossover album Cowboys From Hell was their breakout effort, solidifying their place in the metal pantheon. Vulgar was their even heavier follow-up in 1992 and is, in my opinion, their best album. Some of you might remember Pantera from their iconic guitarist, the shred master Dimebag Darrell Abbott, who was gunned down by a deranged fan in December 2004 while performing with Damageplan (the post-Pantera band he formed with his brother, Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul). On vocals is Phil Anselmo, who performed in numerous side projects like Superjoint Ritual and is currently fronting Down.
