How ‘Finding Dory’s Influential Message Is Universal In More Ways Than One

Finding Dory

No one could have ever imagined that there would be a sequel to Finding Nemo. And yet, 13 years after the film’s release, we are getting one. But Finding Dory isn’t exactly the kind of film you’d expect to see, especially in a sequel. If anything, the film can stand on its own, and you don’t even need to watch Nemo to know what is going on in Dory. In it, we see that Dory is able to recall a once long-lost memory of her parents, and sets out on a journey with Marlin (Albert Brooks) and Nemo (Hayden Rolence). Together, they swim across the Pacific to an aquarium sanctuary, where Dory meets some old friends and makes some new ones too. But there is a real heartfelt message that may hit close to home for some. Remember, Dory suffers from short-term memory loss, and she sees that as a debilitating weight that can frustrate and worry those around her. But her optimism and upbeat personality, plus living by the “just keep swimming” mantra, gives her the spirit she needs to carry on and look for new ways to do things in her own way.

We were recently invited to sit down with a group of journalists to talk the to cast and directors of the film to talk about that message and how it really isn’t meant for one specific group of people but something that is more universal.

Check out what they had to say after the jump.

The film is the follow-up to 2003’s Finding Nemo, which also won an Academy Award. The new trailer is scheduled to make its debut on Wednesday, March 2.

Honest Trailer: Inside Out

Pixar has a history of making awesome movies for kids that are in NO WAY movies for kids. Take Toy Story 3. It’s a movie about human boy Andy’s lovable toys, like Woody and Buzz and Slinky the dog… except there’s a homicidal “Governor from Walking Dead” style villain toy and an ending that sees our cute toy heroes accept their demise in an incinerator! Or WALL-E, a movie with a charming robot, and adorable cockroach; which was really hammering home to the parents in the audience the dangers of laziness, waste, and pollution. Let’s not even get into Up, a movie that literally reached in and yanked the tears out by the gallon… unless you were a kid laughing at the talking dog… “SQUIRREL!!!”

With these in mind, the gang at ScreenJunkies debuted their latest Honest Trailer this week, for the latest Disney/Pixar film guaranteed to go over the heads of children everywhere while forcing their parents into odd conversations after… Inside Out.

Inside Out Joy Disgust

Both Amy Poehler and Mindy Kaling voice emotions in Disney-Pixar’s Inside Out that cultivate personality islands in the mind of Riley, the young girl whose brain the film takes place in. During the L.A. press junket, the two actresses/writers/producers talked about how they nurture their personality islands through collaboration, important core memories, and resonating with young girls, who are inspired by their success as women in entertainment.

Honest Trailers Toy Story

Never before (and I’ve watched them all) has a Screen Junkies Honest Trailer ever made me think as much as their latest entry, Toy Story. Narrator Jon Bailey makes you feel old in a hurry, reminding the audience that Disney’s first foray into computer animation came out the same year as… Windows 95! Of course, if Toy Story came out today, it would look more like Wall-E, as every kid Andy’s age plays with high-priced tech toys like video games, and cell phone apps, and can play with all their friends while sitting all alone in their rooms. I know. I have an 11-year-old.

Inside Out Header Image

Just by looking at the last two trailers for Pete Docter‘s Inside Out, Pixar’s upcoming animated film, its easy to think that the plot lacks a certain depth. The initial premise follows the five emotions of an 11-year-old girl named Riley, who has to come to terms with her family moving and leaving all her good friends behind.

The trailers have revealed that everyone has the same five emotions, and for the film the ones in Riley’s mind are Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling), and Fear (Bill Hader). As we’ve seen before, and emotional outburst at Riley HQ puts a rift between her and her parents. And now the latest trailer reveals what lead to this, and gets deeper into the plot as well as the world beyond the emotion’s HQ. Hit the jump to check out the latest trailer for Inside Out.
