‘Big Hero 6’ Interview: Don Hall and Chris Williams Talk Disney’s First Marvel Animated Film

Big Hero 6 directors (L-R) Chris Williams and Don Hall

It has been quite an amazing journey for Big Hero 6 directors Don Hall and Chris Williams. When Disney acquired Marvel back in 2009, Hall found an obscure Marvel property that he would use as an inspiration for his follow up to Winnie The Pooh. Chris Williams then came on as co-director to help help him out.

Big Hero 6 may be an adaptation of a Marvel title, but this is a Disney movie through and through, and is a culmination of years of research at Carnegie Mellon, San Francisco, and Tokyo, as well as writing and rewriting the story over and over until it was just right.

The Academy Award-nominated* film is already out on Digital HD, but will be available on Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack on February 24. We had a chance to sit down with the directors for a one-on-one interview where we talked about going from the pages of the comic book to the film, the recording process, cosplay, the research, and working with Marvel. Moderator Chris Hardwick introduced the panel for Disney’s upcoming Big Hero 6, their first animated feature based on Marvel Comics characters.

First up were directors Chris Williams and Don Hall, as well as producer Roy Conli. They started working on it and pitched it three years ago, right around the time of New York Comic-Con.

A clip is then shown. Set in San Fransokyo, a slightly futuristic city with a real feel to it, we find young genius Hiro not using his gifts in good ways. His brother, Tadashi, hoping to set him on a better path, lures him to his university lab. “Welcome to the Nerd Lab.” It is there that he is introduced to Baymax, a robotic healthcare companion (kinda resembles the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man), and the other nerds: Honey Lemon, Go-Go, Wasabi (“I spilled Wasabi on my shirt one time people!”), and Fred (who’s not really a student there, just a part-time mascot who thinks science is cool).

D23 Expo 2013: Big Hero 6 banner

Get ready for some Marvel Comics inspiration in a Disney animated film! Big Hero 6 will detail what happens when the imagination and innovation from those two atmospheres collide.

Director Don Hall (Winnie the Pooh), enchanted by both Disney and comic books growing up, spoke to the audience on Friday at the Animation panel at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, CA, describing Big 6 Hero as “inspired by the culture of Japan… mashed up with America.”

Set in San Fransokyo, a mesh of two major cities of the world – San Francisco and Tokyo – draws influences from both metropolitan areas. It is an “origin story of not-so-super heroes,” focused on a 14-year-old named Hiro Hamada, who loses his older brother and connects with a robot to “heal his broken heart.”

Big Hero 6 Header

Ever since Disney acquired Marvel, many fans speculated some great animated flicks based on Marvel properties to come our way. Now the first major project may not be an A-list hero or even a B-list one, but it should generate interest in some of the more smaller titles that Marvel may have. We may have been inundated with so many live-action iterations of Marvel titles, but Big Hero 6 is one of the first of the Marvel titles that will be a full-length animated feature.

Steven T. Seagle and Duncan Rouleau are behind the success that is Big Hero 6, which features a group of rookie superheroes on a mission to save their city from an impending doom. Winnie The Pooh director Don Hall will helm the adaptation based on the hit comic, which is due out for release November 7, 2014. Hit the jump to check out the first footage of the film and two pieces of concept art.
