Viggo Mortensen Offered Role In Neil Marshall’s Dracula Movie ‘The Last Voyage Of The Demeter’

Viggo Mortensen

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is another one of those long-gestating projects that refuses to go by the wayside. The premise of a lone survivor of a ship named the Demeter that was suppose to transport a mysterious – but also dangerous – cargo from Transylvania to England has a lot of promise. David Slade was originally attached to direct the film with Prometheus star Noomi Rapace and Ben Kingsley talking the lead roles.

However, that never came into fruition. Now Neil Marshall (The Descent, Doomsday) is sitting in the director’s chair, and it looks like Viggo Mortensen could possibly take the lead role of Henry Clemens.

Dracula My LoveDracula, My Love
By Syrie James
HarperCollins
Release Date: July 20, 2010
Paperback | Paperback (discount*) | Kindle

If when you read Dracula by Bram Stoker you wished you could get into the head of one of the characters and get an intimate first-person account, then you’re in luck. Dracula, My Love is a revisionist novel that retells Stoker’s novel from the point of view of Mina Harker (neé Murray). The author, Syrie James, is no stranger to this subset of the historical fiction subgenre, having produced such novels as The Lost Memoirs of Charlotte Brontë and The Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen. Through beautifully written prose, she tackles the chain of events in Dracula from Mina’s mind and presents what happened in a highly defined manner that gives new context to the original.

Thankfully, it’s not told in the epistolary format, through diary entries, or through newspaper clippings. Instead, the reader gets Mina’s recollections after the fact. Although there are some changes and additions to Mina and to her history, as well as the sequence of events, James hasn’t made too many departures from Stoker’s tale and she has, for the most part, lent a sense of discovery that fans will gobble up. She presents a fresh new look that considers many different angles.

Lucy’s sleepwalking problems are more drawn out in this novel, and a focal point of the plot. But if you’re expecting a lesbian makeout scene a la Francis Ford Coppola’s 1993 interpretation of Dracula, you won’t find it in this book.

Director Neil Marshall To Captain Dracula Tale ‘The Last Voyage Of the Demeter’

Dracula - Becky Cloonan

Hollywood has always been captivated by the romance of a vampire, although recent incarnations of the character have been focusing on the glitz and glamor of the blood-sucking being. Now The Descent director Neil Marshall hopes to bring back the glory days of the vampire Dracula by helming the long-gestating The Last Voyage of the Demeter.

Bragi Schut’s decade-old script is an adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula that centers on the large sailing vessel the Demeter on its fateful journey transporting Dracula from Transylvania to England. If you know the story of Dracula, then you’re aware that things don’t go as planned on the trip, and when the ship washes ashore in a condition opposite of when it departed, only one survivor is aboard.

Dracula (Illustrated Classics)Dracula
Illustrated Classics Edition
By Bram Stoker
Illustrations by Becky Cloonan
Harper Design
Release date: April 10, 2012
Hardcover | Kindle

Vampires are all the rage these days, with Twilight and True Blood, and no doubt Johnny Depp will make his mark on the genre next month with Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows. But everyone knows there would be no vampire tales today if not for the granddaddy of them all, Dracula.

Now, Harper Design has released a new illustrated edition of Bram Stoker‘s 1897 novel with art by illustrator and comic book artist Becky Cloonan (American Virgin, Conan The Barbarian). This illustrated classics edition is not a mash-up or an redo — this is the full version as written by Stoker, the words are exactly the same, nothing has been changed or deleted. What is different about this version of the novel is that it is now a 384-page hardcover book which contains more than 50 original illustrations by Cloonan and it’s damn gorgeous.

Ever wonder what would have happened if things were slightly different in the old tale of Dracula? Well, this series explores the concept of it all being a repetitive loop, one where things play out slightly different each time, with the characters sometimes being unaware of what is coming to pass. Add to this timeless tale a new entity, in the form of Vampirella, and you get some very different results. Vampirella Vs. Dracula #2 involves the meeting of the two vampires as well as some distinct changes to the plot.
