Emily Blunt The Girl On The Train

The Girl On The Train

Cast: Emily Blunt, Rebecca Ferguson, Haley Bennett, Justin Theroux, Luke Evans, Allison Janney, Édgar Ramírez, Lisa Kudrow
Distributor: Universal Pictures
Rated R | 112 Minutes
Release Date: October 7, 2016

There is a common thread that draws a missing person’s thriller together. Usually, it’s the general motifs like the cheating wife, the sex, the lies, the drama, the kinds of things you’d probably see in a low-budget Lifetime movie. But because David Fincher’s Gone Girl was such a success, it is easy to see why some studios may be showing a bit of interest in the material. Though The Girl On The Train bares a strong resemblance to Gone Girl, director Tate Taylor, using a script written by Erin Cressida Wilson, makes a valiant effort to separate his film from the rest for a relatively entertaining movie. Check out the full review below.

Joy

David O. Russell‘s Joy brings reunites Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, and Robert De Niro, for as the director would describe in an interview with EW, “an epic, unexpected story about the interior life of one woman’s soul, from the ages of 10 to 40.” This isn’t the first time that the four have worked together on one project. They previously teamed up for the Oscar-nominated Silver Linings Playbook, for which all them earned Academy Award nominations. So expect that same level of performance and directorial effort to be in this latest film.

Though initially just a teaser, we get to see the scope of what O. Russell will give us this winter holiday. Check out the first teaser below.

Deliver Us from Evil movie review

Deliver Us from Evil
Blu-ray l DVD
Director: Scott Derrickson
Screenwriter: Scott Derrickson, Paul Harris Boardman
Cast: Eric Bana, Édgar Ramírez, Olivia Munn, Joel McHale
Sony Pictures Entertainment
Rated R | 118 Minutes
Release Date: October 28, 2014

Directed by Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister), Deliver Us from Evil stars Eric Bana as Ralph Sarchie, a New York police detective who investigates a series of disturbing and inexplicable crimes. To combat a demonic entity that is terrorizing the Bronx, Sarchie joins forces with an unconventional priest (Édgar Ramírez) who is well-versed in the rituals of exorcism.

Written by Derrickson and Paul Harris Boardman, Deliver Us from Evil is based upon Beware the Night, a 2001 non-fiction book by Sarchie and co-writer Lisa Collier Cool that chronicles the retired NYPD sergeant’s encounters with the supernatural. The film is an amalgam of Derrickson’s previous work, blending the true crime elements of Sinister with The Exorcism of Emily Rose‘s exploration of demonic possession.

Marvel's Doctor Strange

Marvel Studios has been making significant progress with Doctor Strange in recent weeks, signing up Scott Derrickson (Sinister) to direct and Jon Spaihts (Prometheus) to write the script.

The title role of the Sorcerer Supreme has been linked at various times to Johnny Depp, Jared Leto, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Tom Hardy, but the studio has yet to lock down an appropriate actor to lead this project that might be a more difficult sell with audiences than even Guardians of the Galaxy. One person who can willingly admit to talking about a potential role in Doctor Strange is Édgar Ramírez, the Venezuelan actor who recently stepped into the role originally cast with Gerard Butler in the upcoming Point Break remake.

Blu-ray Review: The Counselor Unrated Extended Cut

The Counselor

The Counselor: Unrated Extended Cut
Blu-ray l DVD
Directed by Ridley Scott
Screenplay by Cormac McCarthy
Starring Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz, and Cameron Diaz
20th Century Fox Home Entertainment
Release Date: February 11, 2014

Of all the highly anticipated films released last year I don’t think any of them received the critical blanket party that greeted the opening of The Counselor, the pulpy drug world thriller that united influential filmmaker Ridley Scott (Blade Runner) and Pulitzer Prize-adorned author Cormac McCarthy (No Country for Old Men, Blood Meridian), the latter having penned his first original feature screenplay. To say that expectations were high for this film is an understatement on the level of the scene in Easy Rider where Peter Fonda tells Dennis Hopper, “We blew it.”

People hated this movie, man. Hated it. Obviously The Counselor had its share of defenders amongst the filmgoing public and the shadowy agents of the blogosphere, but they were mostly silenced or shouted down as the star-studded noir plummeted to a 34% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a massively disappointing fourth opening at the box office. Scott has had his considerable share of theatrical flops that were later vindicated on home video in the form of extended and rejiggered director’s cuts. Not surprisingly, his latest film has received the same treatment and The Counselor may yet find the audience that either berated or ignored it on the big screen as twenty minutes have been added to this exclusive “unrated extended cut.”

Do these previously deleted scenes elevate Scott and McCarthy’s lurid, languid potboiler to the status of an underrated masterpiece? Is it possible that maybe, just maybe, the haters were hopelessly misguided? Well, let’s see…
