ELYSIUM

Given how exciting Neill Blomkamp‘s District 9 was, the anticipation for Elysium was pretty high. While his second directorial effort explored social themes with a sci-fi twist and had those same striking visuals, it wasn’t nearly as strong has his first. The 2013 film was met with mixed reviews, had a weak script, and underperformed at the box office, but wasn’t a total box office bomb.

While on the Chappie press tour, Blomkamp opened up about some of the faults in Elysium, and admits that he “f*cked up.” Hit the jump for more.

10 Facts about Elysium banner

It’s the year 2154 and Earth has been ravaged by disease, crime, pollution, war, and famine. The planet has become ruined and overpopulated, its inhabitants are poverty-stricken and suffering. Miles above Earth orbits the man-made space station called Elysium, where the ultra-wealthy reside in a lavish, healthy, crime-free environment far from the hazards of Earth. But Elysium’s idyllic existence is about to be disrupted. Max (Matt Damon), a dying man with only days left to live, embarks on a imperative mission from Earth to Elysium and is outfitted with the tools to see his dangerous mission through.

Elysium, director Neill Blomkamp‘s follow-up to District 9, introduces us to this dystopic Earth and its orbiting space station, Elysium, which is a paradise with lush vegetation, beautiful weather, mansion estates, and medical pods that easily cure people of their illnesses. The creation of the Elysium space station is just one segment contained in the new Titan Books release, Elysium: The Art of the Film by Mark Salisbury (Prometheus: The Art of the Film, Burton on Burton). This 176-page full-cover oversized hardcover contains concept and production art and designs, as well as stills from the film, along with first-hand accounts from the filmmakers, including legendary artist Syd Mead (Blade Runner, Tron).

In the year 2154, only two classes of people exist: the global elite, who live on a high-tech space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on the overpopulated, diseased “Third World slum” Earth has become.

“Illegals” risk their lives to escape the planet’s crime and poverty, in desperate need of the state-of-the-art medical technology available on Elysium – but Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve Elysium citizens’ luxurious lifestyle.

After an industrial accident leaves him with radioactive poisoning, 36-year-old factory-worker and ex-con Max DeCosta (Matt Damon) has only five days to get from the ruins of Los Angeles to Elysium in order to be cured. Max is outfitted with a powerful exoskeleton and kidnaps a wealthy businessman (William Fichtner) in order to steal his identity and hijack his way into Elysium. If he succeeds, he could save not only his own life, but the poor, huddled masses on Earth as well.

‘Elysium’ Trailer: They Will Hunt You To The Edge Of The Earth

Elysium Header Image

The first trailer for Neil Blomkamp‘s Elysium has just hit the web, and it’s everything you imagined it would be. The film is a follow up to his last sci-fi indie hit District 9. Just like his last film, Elysium puts a sci-fi spin on the social issues that faces us today. Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, and more star in this gritty and fantastic looking sci-fi film.

The Geeks of Doom team saw a couple of selected scenes during last year’s San Diego Comic-Con and yesterday, Sony offered a couple of journalists a glimpse of a more polished product plus an advanced look at this trailer. Based on the looks of it, we can see there will be a clash between two very distant social classes: the rich who live in a luxurious lifestyle orbiting on the heavens, and the poor who live in the slums that cover the entire Earth.

Hit the jump to see the brand new trailer.

SDCC 2012: Elisyum panel

The Screen Gems/Sony Panel concluded the day’s festivities today in Hall H at San Diego’s Comic-Con with a panel for Elysium, a science fiction yarn set in the distant future in which two classes of individuals, the rich and the poor, dwell on a man-made space station named after the title. In classic David vs. Goliath sensibilities, one man, an ex-con, is forced take on a mission that not only will save his life, but takes on the hierarchy of the elite that, if able to topple them, could bring the two separated worlds of the “haves” and “have nots” back together as one.

Director/Writer Neill Blomkamp (District 9) and Simon Kinberg, Shartlo Copley, Academy Award Winners Matt Damon (who plays a “have not” ex-con, baldheaded and looking more menacing than ever) and Jodie Foster (a “have”) discussed the film on the panel (both who were making their first time appearances at Comic-Con).

Matt Damon In Elysium

Director Neill Blomkamp’s follow-up to the 2009 hit District 9, Elysium, will once again feature a blend of sci-fi and social issues. Since production for the film has been heavily guarded, outside of who is cast, we know very little about the film. But with San Diego Comic-Con just around the corner, all that will change when Blomkamp himself will make an appearance to talk about the film.

To tease that much anticipated panel, an image has been released offering us our first look at a bald Matt Damon with a heavy duty gun. You can see the image above, or a bigger version below.
