Labyrinth Movie Image

Back in 2014 came surprising word of a sequel to Jim Henson‘s 1986 feature Labyrinth. The sequel was quickly denied by sources, but no one ever knows if denials like that are because something is actually not happening or if word of it got out to the public before they were ready. A little over a year later the project surfaced again, this time with Guardians of the Galaxy writer Nicole Perlman, though she later said it was clickbait.

Now comes word of a new attempt. It’s being reported that the director behind 2013’s Evil Dead and last year’s Don’t Breathe, Fede Alvarez, has come on board to write and direct the Labyrinth sequel.

Evil Dead 2013 Director Fede Alvarez

Confused? Well you are probably not the only one. Yesterday we reported that Evil Dead remake writer Rodo Sayagues and director Fede Alvarez had not been working on Evil Dead 2 for months. But it was strange that this bit of news didn’t make it into the Hollywood trades. Well there is a reason for that.

Alverez took to twitter to say that we shouldn’t believe everything that is said on the internet – and we all know how the internet can blow things out of proportion.

Evil Dead 2013 Director Fede Alvarez

For all the success of the Evil Dead (2013), and planning of merging the two Evil Dead franchises into one universe, the news of Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues no longer directing Evil Dead 2 comes off as a bit strange. The two were attached to work on the sequel after the first film had a box office smash its opening weekend, and they seemed excited about it those first few weeks. But the following months after the films release, those talks subsided, with most of the attention being focused on Sam Raimi‘s Army Of Darkness 2.

Now in a new interview with Gorosito.TV, Sayagues says they have been off the project for months, and cannot confirm of the producers of the film have intentions with moving forward with a sequel.

Dante's Inferno

When the Visceral Games and Electronic Arts video game Dante’s Inferno was released in 2010, it didn’t make much of a splash. Some people enjoyed it, especially for its look, while others didn’t enjoy it so much due to gameplay that was very similar to the God of War series. And everyone moved on.

Now the game may be getting dusted off or given some new chances by gamers, as a movie version is in the works. It’s being reported that Fede Alvarez, the short film director who made his feature debut with 2013’s Evil Dead and became one of the rare few to prove that remakes can in fact work when done properly, is in negotiations to take on the live-action adaptation.

Continue below for more and to see a trailer for the game.

WonderCon 2013: Evil Dead panel banner

Jolts galore for the jam-packed Arena at WonderCon 2013 in Anaheim, CA, as the Sony Pictures panel for the Evil Dead made its much anticipated appearance. The film, not so much a remake as a reimagining, is looking to take same kind of reins of horror-filled intensity, gore, shocks, and frights as the original did more than 30 years ago, and looking to bridge together generations of fans – those who have been following the original cult smash films and new audiences who will be discovering it for the first time.

Directed by Fede Alvarez, who was handpicked by the original director of the first three films, Sam Raimi, and who also produced with the incomparable and absolute icon of modern horror, Bruce Campbell (who starred as “Ash” in the original trilogy), with Robert Tapert and starring Jane Levy as the main protagonist, the new film looks to scope out a new horizon as the first film did and rightfully take its place in the modern horror pantheon of some of the all- time great stomach-in-knots-cinematic churners.

Geeks of Doom SXSW 2013: Evil Dead

Evil Dead
Director: Fede Alvarez
Screenwriter: Fede Alvarez, Rodo Sayagues, Diablo Cody
Cast: Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas, Lou Taylor Pucci

Synopsis: In the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival. — Ghost House Pictures

Directed by 29-year-old newcomer Fede Alvarez, Evil Dead is based upon Sam Raimi‘s classic 1981 film – but is it a remake? In an interview with Ain’t It Cool News, Alvarez commented on the film’s relationship to the original: “Now, the way I personally like to see Evil Dead (2013), it’s a story that takes place 30 years after The Evil Dead ended. The car is there, the cabin is there… and the book has found its way back to the cabin… New kids will encounter it and suffer its wrath.”

‘Evil Dead’ Remake Slapped With NC-17 Rating; Film To Be Cut For R Rating

THE EVIL DEAD

The amount of blood split in the red band trailer for Fede Alvarez’s remake of the Evil Dead should be a good indication of what the rating will be. A very hard R is what Sony Pictures wants, but it looks like they got more than they bargained for as the first cut was given a NC-17 rating by the MPAA.

The level of violence and just general tone of the trailer certainly gave off the hard R vibe, but if the first cut was really NC-17, I’m worried what kinds of cuts will be made to make it that hard R. A lot of what we saw in the latest red band trailer made people believe that this Evil Dead could live up to its predecessors while making their stomach twist in knots. But how much will be cut from it remains to be seen. Let’s just hope it’s not enough to hurt the film.

The Evil Dead Header

There is a good chance that people will frown upon any remake of a classic or cult movie. However, as Bruce Campbell said in yesterday’s teaser, he knows what you really want in The Evil Dead. The actor promised us that it will be bloody, it will be gory, and it will be nasty. If you watched the announcement trailer, you might have heard the faint overwhelming applause from those who saw a teaser at the The Evil Dead Panel at the New York Comic-Con, which would indicate that Campbell has delivered on his promise.

Now we got our first look at what all the commotion is really all about. Check out the first red-band trailer for The Evil Dead here below.
