Roger Corman

Roger Corman may be known to most as the premiere producer of some of the finest exploitation movies ever made, but to those in the know he is also one of the most important and influential figures in the entertainment industry. Many of Hollywood’s finest talents on both sides of the camera owe their careers in some part to the go-for-broke tutelage they were given by working for Corman, including filmmakers like Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Robert Towne, Peter Bogdanovich, and Ron Howard, and actors like Jack Nicholson, Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, Bruce Dern, and Robert Englund. Corman is a legend, and that is the undisputed truth.

This summer Corman is bringing a catalog of over 400 films he produced and/or directed to the vast cybernetic landscape of the Internet as he launches Corman’s Drive-In, a YouTube channel that will offer up his films for viewing for a fee still yet to be determined.

The Godfather Collection

Right now Amazon has The Godfather Collection: The Coppola Restoration Blu-ray on sale for only $17.99 (that’s 69% off the list price of $57.99).

The 4-disc blu-ray box set includes all three films in the epic cinematic saga of the Corleone crime family, from the groundbreaking 1972 Oscar-winning classic original, The Godfather, to the much-maligned 1990 third chapter, plus a fourth disc containing hours of bonus features including extensive documentaries, deleted scenes (many of which were reintegrated into the first two films when director Francis Ford Coppola was preparing The Godfather: The Complete Novel for Television back in 1977), vintage featurettes, photo and storyboard galleries, theatrical trailers, and much more.

Each film has been fully restored under the supervision of Robert Harris – who has performed similar duties in the past on David Lean’s masterpiece Lawrence of Arabia among many others – and master cinematographer Gordon Willis and comes with a comprehensive audio commentary by Coppola. The grand tragedy of the Corleone clan has never looked or sounded better on home video.

The People Vs George Lucas FilmThe People vs. George Lucas
DVD | Instant Video
Directed by Alexandre O. Philippe
Starring Neil Gaiman, Francis Ford Coppola, Chris Gore, Kevin Rubio, Gary Kurtz, David Prowse, Todd Hanson, George Lucas
Lionsgate
DVD Release Date: October 25, 2011

The People vs. George Lucas is a quasi-documentary film which uses a courtroom debate approach to explore the issues of filmmaking and fanaticism pertaining to the Star Wars franchise, and its creator, George Lucas.

The film combines filmmaker and celebrity interviews with fan-created content and fictional dramatizations to present an all-encompassing look at the indelible mark Lucas has left on pop culture and the film industry.

Interviewees include author Neil Gaiman, writer/director Kevin Rubio (Troops), actor David Prowse (Darth Vader), and Star Wars producer Gary Kurtz. Lucas himself appears frequently in archival footage, but is never interviewed directly by filmmaker Alexandre O. Philippe.

The People vs. George Lucas discusses the extent to which the Star Wars franchise is an incomplete artistic creation of Lucas (and subject to his evolving vision) versus a cultural phenomenon that belongs to the general public.

The Godfather and Apocalypse Now director Francis Ford Coppola has a new movie on the way titled Twixt. The movie will be hitting the festival circuit soon, including the Toronto International Film Festival which has premiered the first official extended festival trailer for the movie.

Twixt stars Val Kilmer as a novelist named Hall Baltimore whose success was thanks to a series of books about witches, but that success has long since departed. In hopes of trying something new, Baltimore uses the history and inspirations of a haunted town with a dark past involving a mysterious murder to craft his next tale.

The movie looks more like a Terry Gilliam film than Coppola, but it certainly looks intriguing. You can see for yourself by heading below now!

Week of Geek: SDCC 2011 Coverage - San Diego Comic Con

SDCC 2011: Twixt panel: Francis Ford Coppola wearing his Edgar Allan Poe maskDirector Francis Ford Coppola debuted footage from his new movie called Twixt, a new non-linear film making experience that incorporates live performances (music and narration) and both 2D and 3D sequences.

If you’re confused by that description, then you are not alone. I didn’t actually know what I was watching when Coppola played the first clip — even after an explanation to the audience.

Basically, Coppola wants to create a movie that can be performed, unlike the current crop of “canned” movies, which are what you see is what you get. Using new software, the director is able to play portions of scenes in different order. Both the narration and the film’s music, done by performance artist Dan Deacon, also has to be altered based on how the new scenes are arranged.

“Why do movies have to be ‘canned’? Everything is canned. The only things we have that’s live are concerts and sports,” Coppola said, adding that his granddaughter describes the excitement of seeing a movie on its premiere night because no one knows whether it’ll be good or bad.

“There is a yearning, I feel, for a little bit more of the live to be put back into film,” he explained.
