David Dastmalchian

Frank Herbert‘s sci-fi epic Dune is being adapted for the big screen once again. The film, which is being directed by Denis Villeneuve, is a sprawling epic featuring a large number of characters that are part of royal families competing over a valuable planetary resource. In the film, one of the noble families is betrayed and it is up to one of the dutiful royal sons to lead a rebellion that will help restore his family’s claim. But this won’t be just another sci-fi film adaptation, as the film will explore themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship with nature.

We know that Villeneuve has assembled quite a cast to appear in this possible two-part epic. And now, another actor has joined the fray. According to new reports, Ant-Man and the Wasp‘s David Dastmalchian will join the film. More on the report below.

“What is to give light must endure burning.” – Viktor E. Frankl

Directed by Frank Pavich, Jodorowsky’s Dune chronicles director Alejandro Jodorowsky‘s unsuccessful attempt to adapt Frank Herbert’s 1965 science fiction novel Dune in the ’70s. The documentary features interviews with the principal players involved in the failed ’70s adaptation as well as filmmakers and industry professionals who have been inspired by Jodorowsky’s legendary effort.

In 1973, film producer Arthur P. Jacobs optioned the film rights to Dune but died before a feature film could be developed. Two years later, the option fell into the hands of Chilean-French filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky, known for avant-garde works like El Topo and Holy Mountain. Jodorowsky wanted to deliver a truly psychedelic experience with Dune – a film so mind-melting and illuminating, it would induce a hallucinogenic “trip” like LSD.

Dune

“The year is, like, a billion or something….”

Toys, hastily-assembled costumes, cardboard box “shields,” fake eyebrows, cheesy effects that make Mystery Science Theater 3000 look like 2001: A Space Odyssey, sock puppet “sandworms,” lots of overacting, and of course…space pen. Yes, friends, David Lynch‘s much-derided 1984 adaptation of Frank Herbert‘s landmark sci-fi novel Dune has become the latest film to receive its own sweded video.

You can watch the 7-minute video here below.

H.P. Lovecraft The Call of Cthulhu

They say you can’t judge a book by its cover. But what if you could judge an author by his or her book?

Artist Selin Arisoy sent us a gallery of images that she created where she took the visage of a handful of timeless fiction authors and characterized them as their famous novels. H.P. Lovecraft as The Call of Cthulhu, Edgar Allan Poe as The Raven, Ray Bradbury as Fahrenheit 451, Mary Shelley as Frankenstein, and Frank Herbert as Dune.

Check them all out below.

Jodorowsky's Dune

The first clip from the forthcoming documentary Jodorowsky’s Dune has been released. You can watch it here below.

The universe works in perplexing ways, especially when it comes to the cinema. There have been more than a few books written about the great films that went unmade for a variety of complex and infuriating reasons. I own three of the best books about the subject: David Hughes’ The Greatest Sci-Fi Movies Never Made, Tales from Development Hell, and Chris Gore’s The 50 Greatest Movies Never Made. And every time I read about how we could have had a Spider-Man movie written and directed by James Cameron or a Marx Brothers comedy that would have paired the esteemed comedy trio with legendary filmmaker Billy Wilder or Arnold Schwarzenegger and Paul Verheoven’s medieval war epic Crusade I feel saddened.
