BOOM! Archer & Armstrong #9 opens with a bang and doesn’t even attempt to slow down! This is only the second Valiant comic that I’ve read since they’re relaunch (shame on me) and I have to say, I was pretty impressed. Enough to delved deeper into their universe. But, that’s besides the point, we’re here to talk about this issue.

I’ve become a fan of Fred Van Lente over the last few years, and with good reason. Everything he’s written, from Hercules to GI Joe, has been very entertaining. This book is no different. We get a nice recap inside the front cover and then we hit the ground running. If you’re familiar with Van Lente’s writing, then you’ll know he excels at adding humor to his scripts and this issue is no exception. Even though Archer & Armstrong are fighting against each other, and higher forces than they can handle alone, there’s some great wise cracks, and the occasional laugh out loud moments. As always, Van Lente does a great job with characterizations and writes with the artist in mind. This is a very enjoyable issue!

I honestly don’t know how I waited a whole month for G.I. Joe #2. But, I’m glad I did. Wait, I’m not glad that I WAITED, I’m glad that the moment is here and I got to read it. Issue #3 comes out next week, right? RIGHT?!?!

Fred Van Lente is quickly becoming my favorite writer. I don’t know how I missed his awesomeness all these year. And for that, I apologize. Now, I’ll be making up for it. Ladies & Gentlemen, G.I. Joe is BACK! BACK to its comic greatness. BACK to the stories that we all imagined while we played with the toys when we were kids. Remember a couple of years ago when we were all so pleasantly surprised when we watched G.I. Joe: Resolute? Yeah, it’s like that.

It is a big week this time and I’m making up for taking last week off. Hey, I get vacations from time to time, but there are just too many books to talk about. We’ve got a couple of high profile first issues, a sad farewell to a classic series, a new issue for my favorite series currently running, and some other stuff. Comic Book History of Comics

IDW Publishing announced today that the first printing of the Comic Book History of Comics by Fred Van Lente and Ryan Dunlavey has sold out, and that they are going back to print.

Now normally, I don’t give two figs when a comics publisher announces a new printing of a sold out book, but I had to show this off for a couple of reasons.

Each and every week “Batman Incorporated Is The Only Thing That Matters” MK2Fac3 and “Dirty Hench” Henchman21 read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible… theoretically. They look forward to some more than others, I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of their pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of May 23, 2012. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

Guys, seriously, I love Florence + The Machine, I’m listening to their MTV Unplugged album right now, and it’s just so good. Right now is a really good time for a fan of female vocalists. Anyway, I know that has nothing to do with what we’re supposed to be talking about right now, and that’s fine, but you should know that Daniel Bryan was robbed on Sunday and he should have taken home the championship! What are we talking about again? Oh right, comics. Sure, there are comics coming out this week, but for the life of me, I can’t think of anything that I’d rather read more than Batman Incorporated, so that’s what I’ll be talking about at length, while Chris talks about some new comics, some new old comics, and some that are in between! So, strap in to your seat belts because I’m about to take you on a nice long ride where I talk a whole lot about Batman. No backseat drivers! Only The GoD List!

Comicpalooza 2011

During Memorial Day weekend (May 27-29, 2011), Comicpalooza held its 4th annual multi-genre convention at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, TX. I attended the first two days of this three-day convention. First of all, this was my first big convention in Texas and the layout of the convention center was massive. The whole convention took place on the 3rd level of this massive convention center.

The highlights of the convention for me were the opportunities to interact with comic creators, comic fans, and celebrities. I spent a short amount of time on Friday observing the entire Con floor and chatting with various artists and writers in Artist Alley. I also checked out a few things in the Dealers Room. Before leaving for the day, I sat in on panel with comic writer Chris Roberson (I-Zombie), Fred Van Lente (Marvel Zombies), and Brian Denham (Zombie Fairy Tales) on a panel titled Comics & Zombies. By the name of the panel, you can guess what was discussed.

Alpha Flight Variant Cover

So Alpha Flight is Canada’s premiere super hero team. The entire team has been killed off at least once in the last couple of years, probably even more. Somehow though those resilient buggers are back to kick some butt in an all new miniseries coming from Marvel Comics.

Writers Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente and artist Dale Eaglesham will be offering up their take on the super team. This new 8-issue miniseries is a Fear Itself tie-in that finds Canada in the grip of fear and their greatest protectors named as enemies of the state. So it appears this story will follow Alpha Flight as they battle the fear and try to restore order to the Great White North.

Alpha Flight 1 of 8 hits store shelves on June 6, 2011. Check out these early images…
