Okay, first off, if I have to try to convince you to buy a comic that contains eight premiere issues for a measly six bucks then I might just have to reassess what I am doing here.

I have reviewed any number of these titles at different times and I cannot even begin to stress to you how great of a deal this is. Dark Horse Comics continues to amaze me with their marketing strategies. I can think of no better way to test out some new comics than with this compilation. Folks, I present to you Dark Horse Number Ones!

Story by Neil Gaiman
Adaptation, Art, and Lettering by Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá
Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: June 22, 2016
Cover Price: $17.99

I swear Neil Gaiman is like King Midas in some ways. It seems that everything he touches turns to gold. This comic book adaptation of his short story How To Talk To Girls At Parties, is just another example of one of Gaiman’s works being transmogrified in the best of ways. To paraphrase an old idiom: There’s more than one way to re-envision a Neil Gaiman story. I liked the story when I first read it but being the comic nerd I am, I absolutely love this graphic novel in ways I can only barely express.

But allow me to try. Check it out below.

Release Date: April 14, 2015
Cover Price: $29.99

When we first see Casanova Quinn in the open pages of Avaritia, he’s like we’ve never seen him before: sad, angry, hating his job after years of loving it. After the events of Gula, our favorite E.M.P.I.R.E. agent is destroying alternate realities in an attempt to stop his nemesis, Newman Xeno, from ever existing. But it’s the more subtle thing that continues to blow me away every time I revisit this story: when we first see Casanova — he has Xs for eyes.

It’s one of many signals that this arc of Casanova will be unlike we’ve seen before.

Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: June 12, 2013
Cover Price: $3.99

Dark Horse has just released The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys #1. This bizarrely fashioned post-apocalyptic superhero story is written by Gerard Way and Shaun Simon with art from Becky Cloonan. Check out my thoughts below:

Here’s what we know: The superhero team known as The Killjoys fought against Better Living Industries — an evil mega-corporation shedding individuality from the citizens of Battery City. The Killjoys also protected a young girl whom they believed to be a messiah of sorts; however, The Killjoys were all killed and only the girl survived. Now, twelve years later, the Killjoys’ followers, The Ultra V’s — a group of reckless, careless punk teenagers — are in the midst of continuing the fight against the B.L.I. and anyone else who might get in their way. The nameless girl wanders the streets with her cat and a radio, avoiding danger at all costs. When she meets up with The Ultra V’s, she quickly learns that the term “superhero” does not have quite the same meaning as it used to and that the B.L.I. are on her trail.

Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: May 29, 2013
Cover Price: $3.50

Mike Mignola is the man. His Hellboy comics have brought me unbelievable amounts of joy over the years. Not to mention the multitude of spin off comics that he’s had a hand in during is all. And B.P.R.D.: Vampire #3 is just such a book. Rich history and well developed, though somewhat enigmatic, characters really bring this mini-series to life and capture the reader’s attention from start to finish.

Taking place directly after B.P.R.D.:1948, we bear witness to a tragic tale of a tormented field agent and the harrowing journey he must undertake to regain his fast-disappearing sanity and exact revenge upon the undead who’s dreams haunt him nightly. Agent Simon Anders finds himself in a Czech hamlet, following a lead that hopefully will take him to the Hecate worshiping vampires from his dream…or is it a memory, so vivid are the details. But as the saying goes, “Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.”
