Week of Geek: SDCC 2011 Coverage - San Diego Comic Con

SDCC 2011: Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance panel: Nicolas CageIt’s no secret that in the last few years Nicolas Cage’s career has taken a turn for the bizarre and outrageous, with films like Bangkok Dangerous, Bad Lieutenant, and Drive Angry. And likewise, directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor have been pushing the envelope for years with gonzo films like Crank and Gamer. So what sort of batshit insane movie could possibly come from the collaboration of these two unpredictable forces? San Diego Comic-Con audiences got a peek today with a preview of Neveldine/Taylor’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, a sequel to the 2007 original.

The panel began with a montage showing off the gonzo shooting style of Neveldine/Taylor as they operated their cameras right alongside the stuntmen, rollerblading along with speeding cars, and hanging off swinging rigs. In fact, they proudly proclaimed they wouldn’t ask the stuntmen to do anything they wouldn’t do themselves, and vow that if any stuntmen are injured during shooting, they promise those takes would be in the film.

Ghost Rider

Thinking back on the level of excitement that people had for the promise of a live-action movie based on Ghost Rider will submerge you in a sudden depression knowing now what we do about how that film turned out. And it is with that depression drowning us that difficulties arise in finding any level of excitement for the proposed Ghost Rider 2 sequel that looks to be on the way.

For those of you few who do maintain a desire to see Ghost Rider 2 happen soon, there are now a bunch of new updates to behold. Collider recently spoke to producer Mike De Luca who had a handful of information for us, including what looks like it may become the official title: Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

The biggest of these news bits starts with directing: when asked about whether or not original director Mark Steven Johnson would come back, De Luca was replied that Johnson will not be returning to do the sequel and that a new director would be behind the camera. He even went as far as saying that David Goyer (Blade: Trinity, The Unborn) may be a possible candidate for director. Goyer would make sense because the script for the sequel is being developed around a 2001 Ghost Rider draft that the writer/director/producer scripted (Read: Sony To Use 9-Year-Old David Goyer Script For ‘Ghost Rider 2′).

Ghost Rider

Collider was able to talk to producer David Goyer recently, and he shared a fun little fact about the sequel that very few are looking forward to seeing: Ghost Rider 2. Goyer is best known as a writer who penned all three Blade movies and both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight (co-writer). He’s also done some directing, like his horror movie The Unborn; as well as a producer, bringing us the latest TV hit, Flash Forward.

The catch here is that when Goyer wrote the script, he wrote it in the same light as Blade: dark and violent with a hard R-rating. Sony, of course, wants nothing to do with that, so their plan is to clean it up and work it around to get the same PG-13 the first movie had.

The Gold Box spotlight deal of the day over at Amazon today is Superhero Blu-ray Collection for only $79.95 (that’s 62% off the list price of $208.75).

This 8-disc Blu-ray boxed set includes seven major (and relatively recent) superhero action films from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment: Spider-Man High Definition Trilogy (Spider-Man / Spider-Man 2 / Two-Disc Spider-Man 3), Ghost Rider (Extended Cut), Hellboy (Director’s Cut), Underworld (Unrated), and Underworld Evolution.

That’s a nice pick of movies right there. Now let’s do the math: $79.95 divided by 7 movies is about $11.42 each. The Spider-Man blu-ray trilogy is selling for $49.99 on its own and the other films are much more than $12 each, so this is a pretty sweet deal for Blu-ray, and for major blockbuster titles on Blu-ray at that.
