King Diamond grammy nomination Volbert Room 24 song 2014

Tonight is the live telecast of the 56th Annual Grammy Awards and while I typically dislike 99.9% of the music represented at this awards show, I will still tune in. It’s the one time of the year where I find out “who the fuck are those people” who dominate the current pop charts. Here’s the thing: If you’re not Madonna/Lady Gaga (same thing) or now Katy Perry (who I still call Cat-y Perry) or Beyonce (Mrs. Carter if you’re nasty), then I probably don’t know the hell you are and if I do, I’m probably baffled as to why anyone would consider you relevant.

Anyhow, all this to say, I have always felt and will likely always feel like the Grammys are complete bullshit.

So, why bother writing about the Grammys? Well, first, there’s the whole Metallica thing — I was a fan well before the Black Album was even conceived and was around for their first Grammy performance, so I’m looking forward to seeing them. Second, and most importantly, I’m psyched that King Diamond – and by King Diamond I mean King himself, not his band — has been nominated this year (the band was nominated in 2008 for “Never Ending Hill,” but lost to Slayer). King’s nomination, in the Best Metal Performance category, comes from his guest appearance on Volbeat’s song “Room 24.”

Metallica was in rehearsals this week preparing for this Sunday’s Grammy Awards ceremony where the heavy metal giants will perform their song “One” along with Chinese classical pianist Lang Lang.

Updates about the rehearsals along with accompanying photos of the seemingly mismatched musicians have been posted to Metallica’s social media accounts, with Lang posting to his Twitter on January 23, 2014 that he was in “epic rehearsal with the Metallica guys.”

Here below you can check out some photos of the rehearsal, which were posted to Metallica’s Facebook page.

Metal Alliance Tour - Anthrax, Exodus

Anthrax has announced that Jon Donais of Shadows Fall will be filling in as lead guitarist for the departing Rob Caggiano on the band’s upcoming tour dates, including the Metal Alliance Tour in North America this Spring. Anthrax is headlining the tour, with supporting acts Exodus, Municipal Waste, High On Fire, and Holy Grail, and will perform their classic, much-loved 1987 album Among the Living in its entirety.

In early 2010, former lead singer Joey Belladonna returned to the New York-based trash metal band and in 2011 the reunited line-up released the album Worship Music, their first together since 1990’s Persistence Of Time. Worship Music received critical acclaim and one of its songs, “I’m Alive,” is up for a Grammy in the Best Rock/Metal Performance category. This nomination, which was announced in December 2012, marks the fourth time the band has received a Grammy nod.

Joe Satriani Sues Coldplay For Biting His Riffs [Updated]

SatchGuitar wizard Joe Satriani is suing snooze rockers Coldplay, claiming that the band’s hit song “Viva La Vida” uses riffs from his 2004 instrumental “If I Could Fly.”

In the lawsuit, Satriani states that “Viva La Vida” used “substantial original portions” of his song from the album Is There Love in Space? One listen to both of these tunes and it’s obvious that this is an open and shut case, in favor of Satriani.

Now, I should be really angry with Satch (a musician for whom I happen to love) for making me actually listen to Coldplay for four whole minutes, but I was laughing so hard at Coldplay’s blatant rip-off that I decided to forgive him.

You can listen to both songs here below — and I apologize in advance for subjecting you to Coldplay, but seriously, you have to hear this. At almost a minute into “If I Could Fly” there’s a lead guitar track that is the exact melody of the chorus of “Viva La Vida.”
