The Twilight Zone

We first found out that the Academy Award winning writer and director behind Get Out, Jordan Peele, was producing a new take on The Twilight Zone back in 2017. Since that time we’ve seen a teaser video and a Super Bowl spot, and also found out that Peele himself would be hosting the anthology series.

Now CBS All Access has released an official trailer for the brand new Twilight Zone. On top of that, they’ve also revealed a premiere date for the show. You can find the info and watch the trailer below.

Brigsby Bear
Blu-ray
Director: Dave McCary
Screenwriters: Kevin Costello, Kyle Mooney
Cast: Kyle Mooney, Mark Hamill, Claire Danes, Jane Adams, Greg Kinnear, Matt Walsh, Michaela Watkins, Ryan Simpkins, Alexa Demie, Jorge Lendeborg Jr.
Distributor: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment
Rated PG-13 | 97 Minutes
Release Date: November 14th, 2017

Combining elements of Blast From the Past, Room, and Perks of Being a Wallflower, Brigsby Bear is a wholly unique animal, and one to be greatly admired. This is a refreshingly original work of art that feels like a bizarro-world SNL sketch stretched into a 90+ minute film. Considering nearly everyone involved is connected to Saturday Night Live, it all kind of makes sense. Written by Kevin Costello and Kyle Mooney, and directed by their childhood friend Dave McCary, Brigsby Bear is full of wonder and creativity, a movie both heart-wrenching and heartwarming simultaneously. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at parts, and I spent most of the film doing some weird combination of the two.

Green Zone movie posterGreen Zone
Directed by Paul Greengrass
Starring Matt Damon, Greg Kinnear, Amy Ryan, Antoni Corone, Nicoye Banks
Rated R
Release date: March 12, 2010

“Someday this war’s gonna end…”
— Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore from Apocalypse Now

“You know they’re all kids in Washington? It’s like Bugsy Malone, but with real guns.”
— Judy Molloy from In The Loop

“The reasons we go to war always matter. They always matter.”
— Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller from Green Zone

Green Zone: The Truth Ultimatum

The front between myth and reality evaporates as the search for the truth rages on in Paul Greengrass‘ Iraq War thriller, Green Zone.

In Green Zone, Greengrass has decided to merge his serious political films, such as Bloody Sunday and United 93, with the wildly entertaining Jason Bourne films he has directed: The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. At first, the result is one of supreme imperfection, but I have come to the conclusion that Greengrass has directed the first truly great thriller with the Iraq War as background. I have to remember that this is Greengrass’ version of the truth that he has taken from Brian Helgeland‘s screenplay. Helgeland’s screenplay is adapted from Rajiv Chandrasekaran’s Imperial Life In The Emerald City: Inside Iraq’s Green Zone. Chandrasekaran is a reporter and editor for The Washington Post. The screenplay is more inspired from his wonderfully insightful book than a straight adaptation.

Ghost Town
DVD
Directed by David Koepp
Starring Ricky Gervais, Greg Kinnear, Téa Leoni, Jordan Carlos, Dequina Moore
Paramount Home Entertainment
Release Date: December 27, 2008

David Koepp may be best known for writing big studio summer blockbusters such as Spider-Man, Jurassic Park, and last year’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but every few years he gets behind the camera and makes a movie that has an interesting concept but ultimately gets marketed poorly, released at the wrong time, and forgotten about before it even has a chance. Now I’ve never been interested enough to see Koepp’s 1996 directorial debut The Trigger Effect but I did enjoy Stir of Echoes (1999) and Secret Window (2004), his adaptations of short works from Richard Matheson. As a director, Koepp has not found a distinctive voice yet but he manages to make perfectly fine films that should not be overlooked in a day and age where mature, intelligent genre films coming from major studios are in short supply. His latest effort Ghost Town basically suffered the same fate as those I’ve already mentioned, but hopefully the film will find new life now that it is available on DVD.

Ghost Town Blu-ray DVDGhost Town
Blu-ray Edition
Starring Ricky Gervais, Tea Leoni, Greg Kinnear
Directed by David Koepp
Paramount Home Entertainment
Release Date: December 27, 2008

When I first saw the trailer for Dreamworks’ film Ghost Town on television, I immediately assumed it as another example of a popular TV star making a crappy movie for a big paycheck. I don’t know about you but watching Ricky Gervais gag because of a smelly dog is not funny to me, but maybe I was the wrong target audience for the film. Having just been released on DVD and Blu-ray, I thought I’d give it a try and it turns out the movie’s only mistake was hiring whoever created those terrible trailers.

Ghost Town centers around dentist Bertram Pincus (Ricky Gervais). Pincus is not the nicest nor the most social guy around and it shows in his lack of friends and loved ones. After Pincus unexpectedly dies for a brief moment during a routine surgery, he begins to see dead people. News of someone alive being able to see the dead passes quickly through the ghost community, resulting in ghosts showing up at Pincus’ doorstep. One of the ghosts, Frank (Greg Kinnear), makes Pincus a promise. If Pincus helps Frank’s widow, Gwen (Tea Leoni), Frank will make all the ghosts stop bothering him. Things, of course, go south and Pincus ends up questioning his past, present, and future.
