Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro

Even with Guillermo del Toro working on his live-action adaptation of Pinocchio for Netflix, the director still finds time to add to his working slate. This is exciting news for fans of his work. And following films like Crimson Peak and the Oscar-winning Shape Of Water, it looks like he will be diving back into something with an action angle. What’s even more interesting is that he will be teaming up with J.J. Abrams over at Bad Robot to deliver us this new project.

New reports say the film, tentatively titled Zanbato, will focus on a young female ninja. However, the director, himself, took to Twitter to clarify his upcoming project, one that he has been developing for the past six years. More on the report here below.

The Boy and His Grandmother In The Witches

Following the news last month that Anne Hathaway will play the Grand High Witch in director Robert Zemeckis‘s new adaptation of the 1983 Roald Dahl book The Witches, comes word that fellow Oscar winner Octavia Spencer is in talks to join her on the cast. Earlier today we saw an official trailer for one of Spencer’s latest, a horror titled Ma.

In addition to Spencer joining the cast it’s also being reported that Jahzir Bruno and Codie-Lei Eastick are currently in negotiations for roles, and that Black-ish creator and writer of the upcoming Shaft and Coming to America sequels Kenya Barris will now be co-writing the screenplay with Zemeckis.

Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark

Alvin Schwartz‘s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark may have been presented as a collection of children’s horror stories that is rooted in folklore and urban legend, but it is the basis of why those same kids who read all three volumes are fans of the horror genre now. I remember reading at least one book when I was a kid, but I’d never thought they would be able to turn all of that into a film.

Now, CBS Films will be releasing an adaptation of the same name. In it, a group of young people attempt to solve a mystery that involves a series of spectacularly horrific deaths in their small hometown. Check out the first look at Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark here below.

The Witches (1990)

Back in June we found out that Back to the Future and Who Framed Roger Rabbit director Robert Zemeckis would be directing the long-in-development new take on the Roald Dahl story The Witches. The story was previously adapted into the 1990 movie of the same name starring Anjelica Huston.

Now that adaptation has found its star. It’s being reported that Anne Hathaway has signed on to play the Grand High Witch in the movie, the same role Huston played in the ’90 version.

Guillermo del Toro Talks About His Not So Family Friendly Take On ‘Pinocchio’

Pinocchio

In October it was announced that Academy Award winner Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water, Pan’s Labyrinth) was finally going to make his take on Pinocchio at Netflix.

But if you were expecting something similar to Disney’s 1940 animated classic, then you haven’t been paying close enough attention to del Toro’s work. His fairy tales tend to exist in much darker worlds. And that will be no different here, as del Toro says his version is not suitable for the whole family. For a lighter take, you’ll have to look to the live-action remake Disney is currently developing.

Del Toro talked about the project recently, including whether it’s a political film, comparisons to Frankenstein’s monster, and his decade-long quest to get the film made. You can see what he had to say below.

Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro

There’s no doubt that Guillermo del Toro is an accomplished filmmaker. The Academy Award-winning director behind The Shape of Water has been behind the lens of a handful of projects like Pan’s Labyrinth, Crimson Peak, the Hellboy films, and Blade II.

But despite all the acclaim he has gotten in the past, del Toro has more than a handful of projects that are unproduced. At The Mountains of Madness, Beauty and the Beast, Fantastic Voyage, and a Hulk TV series, are all promising titles that went unmade. And now, he has revealed a long list of other projects that have gone unproduced. Check out the full list, below.

Pinocchio

The Shape of Water and Pan’s Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro has been trying to make his own version of the Pinocchio for a long time now. In fact, it’s a passion project he’s wanted to do his entire life.

Now del Toro is finally getting to make Pinocchio. And better yet, he gets to make it the way he’s been trying to make for years. A stop-motion animated feature inspired by Gris Grimly‘s illustrated version of the Carlo Collodi tale, made with the help of none other than The Jim Henson Company (though they won’t be making the puppets, that will be Mackinnon & Saunders). The film is happening at Netflix which makes all the sense in the world with del Toro behind Trollhunters and an upcoming horror anthology there, and The Jim Henson Company’s Dark Crystal project set up there. And the best part? It sounds like this one is ready to go with production expected to begin this fall.

The Witches (1990)

One of my favorite movies growing up was The Witches, the 1990 adaptation of Roald Dahl‘s 1973 book of the same name. A new adaptation of the book has been in the works for quite a while now, with Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuaron attached to direct at different points.

Now that new adaptation is back in business. It’s being reported that Back to the Future and Forrest Gump director Robert Zemeckis is in final negotiations to direct The Witches for Warner Brothers, with a deal expected to be made official soon.

Death Stranding

It’s been two years now since we were first introduced to Death Stranding, the latest game from Hideo Kojima, at E3 2016, and tonight at E3 2018 we got our first peek at actual gameplay.

Another lengthy trailer for the game was shown, clocking in at over eight minutes and presenting plenty of new cinematic footage mixed with the aforementioned first looks at the game in action. No one still has any freakin’ clue what’s going on in this one, but it is progressing toward finally making its way to our confused eyes.

Thankfully we now have a brief description of Death Stranding to shed a little bit of light on what it’s about, and you can find that below along with the new trailer.
