Guillermo Del Toro Pacific Rim

The century-plus history of the cinema has seen more than its fair share of grand projects nurtured by filmmakers for years before being abandoned under any number of conditions. In modern times there have been few directors as determined to make a dream project into a reality as Guillermo Del Toro and his long-gestating adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft‘s 1936 novella At the Mountains of Madness.

After keeping it on the back-burner for several years, the man who brought the world the Hellboy movies, Pan’s Labyrinth, and last year’s international blockbuster Pacific Rim announced his intentions to bring Lovecraft’s vision of bone-chilling horror to the big screen in 2010. The project found a home at Universal Pictures with none other than James Cameron serving as a producer and Tom Cruise circling the lead role. Del Toro intended to shoot Mountains of Madness in 3D on a budget of around $120 million. Giving this film the coveted green light seemed practically a certainty, but unfortunately the studio pulled the plug early the following year over concerns if the film would reach a wide enough audience to justify the sizable expenses that would be required to suitably adapt it for the screen, especially since Del Toro was aiming for an R rating with the final product.

Kickstarter Spotlight: The Squdder

There are a lot of Kickstarter campaigns out there trying to get you to part with your hard-earned cash. But how many of them can say they are from Ben Templesmith and 44FLOOD? That’s what sets THE SQUIDDER apart from all the rest and that’s why we want to bring it to your attention, because these folks do their due diligence when it comes to putting together an awesome project.

If you love Lovecraft’s Cthulhu and want to see it take a science fiction-inspired leap forward, then this is the one for you. Described as “an original graphic novel about an old soldier from a forgotten war in a post-apocalyptic world that has left him behind,” this is the first creator-run book from Templesmith in five years. It’s something near and dear to his heart so I have no doubt it’s going to be excellent from start to finish. Not to mention the fact that this Kickstarter beat it’s goal so well that they upped the length from 108 pages to 144 pages (33% more)!

Check out the video below for more information direct from Ben Templesmith himself.

Arcane Secrets #1Arcane Secrets #1
Written and illustrated by Angel A. Svoboda
Translated by Rafael Nieves
Lettered by Malaka Studio
Edited by Jeremy Holt
Amigo Comics
Release Date: August 28, 2013
Cover Price: $3.99

I asked to review this comic with no knowledge whatsoever of the publisher, the creator, or the content. It sounded up my alley, as far as titles go anyway. Well, Arcane Secrets #1 is pretty much what I was expecting. I say pretty much because I wasn’t, in any way, aware that it was geared for adolescents. That said, I review a lot of stuff for children so I’m not put off at all. As a matter of fact, I found myself more interested. So read on and I’ll tell you more about this amazing book.

Originally released by Dibbuks, a publishing company in Spain, this mini-series of three issues has all the earmarks of being fun for the whole family. I did a bit of research and found that it was given a spotlight in the June 2013 Previews. If you’re unaware of how important this is then please note that most comic stores do their ordering or at least compile their lists based on what’s offered in their monthly Previews. Getting a call out in this magazine is sure to raise awareness and sales for that particular issue. So, this is a pretty big deal to an independent company like Amigo Comics, the distributor of this series here in the United States.
