Constantine: The Television Series

We asked you to tweet your support of the NBC show Constantine. And you did. We asked you to pass the word and get other people involved saving the show. And you did. We asked you to issue death threats against NBC executives. And you…wait a second. No, we didn’t. That’s not just illegal, it’s immoral! What are you? Some sort of hellion? Or maybe you, like me, are a Hellblazer fan! I know there are a lot of us but sadly, this time, our voices went unheard. Or, more likely, the proof was NOT in the pudding as far the ratings went. Why didn’t more folks watch this series?

Constantine NBC series

Last month, NBC released a 3-minute trailer for their upcoming show Constantine, which is based on DC’s Hellblazer comic book series.

Now, a new promo is online for the hour-long supernatural drama that contains new footage from the show, as well as a DC universe Easter egg in the form of Doctor Fate’s helmet. Check it out here below and watch for the DC universe cameo – it’s around the 47-second mark in the video. It’s been rumored that the sorcerer Doctor Fate would make an appearance in the pilot episode of Constantine, although it’s not clear if it’s the character himself or just his powerful Helmet of Fate.

In the new series, Matt Ryan stars as John Constantine, a character previously brought to life on screen by Keanu Reeves in the 2005 feature film Constantine. Starring alongside Ryan is Lucy Griffiths, who you’ll remember as Eric Northman’s vampire sister on True Blood.

John Constantine reveal

Warner Brothers is setting themselves up to have a big Fall TV season with pilots in the works for three new shows: The Flash, Gotham, and Constantine. We’ve already had a few reveals this week on The Flash and Gotham, and now we get the first official look at actor Matt Ryan in his role of John Constantine for the upcoming NBC show.

Check out the full photo of Ryan as Constantine here below.

Constantine follows the escapades of John Constantine, an occultist and con-man who occasionally helps people against demons and other supernatural forces. Judging from this image, it looks like the producers of the show, Daniel Cerone (The Mentalist) and David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight) and director Neil Marshall (Game of Thrones) have found an actor who at the very least looks like his comic book counterpart.

The GoD List banner

Each and every week, I, “I am Iron Man” Henchman21, and “Stop Saying That” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible… theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of May 8, 2013. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

I hope you all had a pleasant Free Comic Book Day, but there’s no rest around here. It’s another week and we’ve got another stack of new books for you to check out. This week has a whole heap of demons and monsters, with some good old fashioned mutants mixed in for good measure. But fear not, reading this week’s selections won’t make you a bad person. Quite the opposite, actually. The only thing that will make you a bad person is if you choose to ignore this week’s GoD List!

‘Hellblazer #300’ Marks The End Of DC/Vertigo’s Long-Running Series

Hellblazer #300 - final issue

Well, it’s the end of an era as DC/Vertigo brings Hellblazer, its longest running series, to a close today with Hellblazer #300, and I’m sad to see it go.

It’s been almost 30 years since John Constantine’s first appearance in the pages of Swamp Thing in the 1980s, and it’s been 25 years since the character’s solo series began, and over that time, many readers have come to follow the adventures of the always duplicitous magician as he has cheated death time after time.

Without getting too much into whether it’s good or not for DC to move Constantine full time into the regular DC Universe (as part of New 52 DC Universe), I can’t help but feel that comics are a little bit more boring without Hellblazer. Hellblazer has been a book that offered something a little different. You may not have read it all the time, but it was always there, as true as the North Star. The series maintained a generally high quality and was the launch pad for many successful creators. Garth Ennis, Steve Dillon, Warren Ellis, Jason Aaron, and Grant Morrison all worked on the series early in their careers.

Each and every week, I, “Lawful Neutral” Henchman21 read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible… theoretically. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

It is a big week this time and I’m making up for taking last week off. Hey, I get vacations from time to time, but there are just too many books to talk about. We’ve got a couple of high profile first issues, a sad farewell to a classic series, a new issue for my favorite series currently running, and some other stuff. Let’s not waste anymore time, it’s GoD List time!
