DOOM

DOOM
XBOX ONE (Physical l Digital), PS4 (Physical l Digital), PC (Physical l Digital)
DEVELOPER: id Software
PUBLISHER: Bethesda Softworks
RELEASE DATE: May 13, 2016

The return of DOOM arrived a little over a week ago with the release of the latest installment in the hit first-person shooter series, a reboot of the franchise from original developer id Software.

I’m in an interesting position reviewing this one, as I’ve never actually played any of the DOOM games before. No, I can’t believe it either! My first-person shooter experience in the ’90s was with another id Software title (and another series now published by Bethesda), Wolfenstein 3D. But after seeing trailers and gameplay, I was excited to dive into the madness.

The long-awaited return of the DOOM game franchise has arrived (stay tuned for our review), and no demon is safe.

To celebrate the release of the game, an eight-foot-tall sculpture of one of the game’s Revenant enemies carved from wood—using chainsaws, fittingly—was commissioned. It’s a quite impressive, and slightly intimidating, piece of work.

Be sure to continue below to check out a video of the sculpture being made.

Last month the campaign trailer was released for DOOM, the upcoming reboot of the first-person shooter video game franchise. Now publisher Bethesda Softworks has released a trailer dedicated to the game’s multiplayer action.

As you would expect, the multiplayer looks just a nutso as the single player campaign. If I had to make a comparison, I’d say it looks a little bit like Halo…only set in the depths of Hell and you can become a giant demon monster and rip other players in half. Halo doesn’t have that. At least not the last time I played it, anyway.

DOOM E3 2015 Gameplay Reveal Teaser

A new trailer has been released for DOOM, the reboot of the popular first-person shooter franchise developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks.

The trailer is a campaign trailer, though don’t expect to see much in terms of actual story. It’s more of the brutal and bloody actions fans of the franchise expect of these games. But if that’s not enough, this particular trailer also confirms an official release date for you to circle on the calendar.

You can check out the new DOOM trailer below.

Dungeons and Dreamers header

Dungeons & Dreamers
A story of how computer games created a global community
Paperback | Kindle Edition
Written by Brad King and John Borland
ETC Press
Release Date: March 15, 2014

Like any well-written history book, Dungeons & Dreamers captures your attention from the very beginning. For those of us who are older and remember a time before video games were a major source of entertainment, this book is like going home again. It firmly establishes its roots in tabletop gaming and taking the reader through a step-by-step transformation to the wondrous gaming networks we have today. And if it stopped there, this would still have been a labor of love that justified the long hours spent researching and interviewing. But it’s more than that, it’s an exceptionally detailed accounting of the work of several pioneers in the video gaming industry.

Modern gaming owes much of its entertainment and viability to early roleplaying gamers like Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, who adapted other tabletop games into a more detail rich experience, allowing the player to move about in an unfettered landscape. Many people would come later on that would embrace this concept and take it to the next level. Richard Garriott was one of the first to act upon this, creating a multitude of text based games that eventually led to his massive multiplayer game, Ultima (and its sequels).
