Stan Against Evil NYCC 2016-03

After a long day at New York Comic-Con that started by waiting on a 90-minute line for Ash vs Evil Dead at 9:30AM, I sat down at the Stan Against Evil screening at 5:15PM. And I could not have planned a better opening/closing part to my day. Stan Against Evil was created by Dana Gould, a former stand-up comic who has written for The Simpsons. The television show focuses on a heartbroken widower, whose life spirals out of control when his wife passes away. Soon, he is fired from his job as police chief of Willard’s Mill, NH, and is forced to salvage a relationship with his quirky daughter whom he barely knows. If this sounds all doom and gloom, fear not my friends… Willard’s Mill is beset by witches and demons and somehow, it’s up to Stan to save the day.

The IFC channel has been thrilling viewers all month long with their SCREAM-O-WEEN fright fest with horror movies like Silent Hill, House of 1000 Corpses, and Saw. As part of this programming, the network will be presenting the awesome cult classic horror musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show every night at midnight from October 27 through October 30. There will also be encore presentations on each day, including on Halloween morning and afternoon (October 31).

If you’re a fan of Rocky Horror, then you know that audience partici … pation is half the fun! So, be sure to check out IFC’s Watch-Along guide.

I’ve seen Rocky Horror tons of times at home and at midnight theater screening, I’ve reviewed the reviewed the 35th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray Edition (which I own), and I’m actually going to a stage production of it on Halloween night, yet I’m still excited about it airing every night this week and plan to watch it on IFC, especially because I love the idea that I’ll be watching it along with so many other viewers.

Even though I tend not to believe most fan theories regarding hidden details and messages in certain classic films I have to appreciate the imagination and insight that goes into their creation. It’s amazing when your love of a movie inspires you to look at it again with a modestly skewed perspective to see what you may have missed before, and then to try and interpret what it all means. I may not buy into the theory that Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon functions as an alternate soundtrack to The Wizard of Oz, but for every five people who are told that same theory for the first time at least one of them will sneak away from the others to their nearest Barnes & Noble to grab the Moon CD and Oz DVD so they can test it out for themselves.

+ 1 (Plus One)

+ 1 (Plus One)
Directed by Dennis Iliadis
Screenplay by Bill Gullo; Story by Dennis Iliadis
Starring Rhys Wakefield, Logan Miller, and Ashley Hinshaw
IFC Midnight
Release Date: September 20, 2013
Running Time: 92 minutes

+ 1 (Plus One), the latest film from Greek director Dennis Iliadis (Hardcore), bases its plot around a pair of interesting questions: 1.) If you were given the chance to go back in time and rectify a terrible mistake, would you do so even though the previous outcome was the one meant to happen?; and 2.) How would you react to suddenly being confronted by a clone of yourself that has all of your memories but only up to a certain point in their life?

The first quandary is posed to David (Rhys Wakefield, The Purge), an aimless high school graduate whose college student girlfriend Jill (Ashley Hinshaw, Chronicle) feels that their relationship is going nowhere fast and David’s lack of future prospects is holding her back. These emotions are crystallized one afternoon when David mistakenly approaches Melanie (Natalie Hall, Pretty Little Liars) in the halls of the university believing at first that she’s Jill because the two of them look very much alike, but doesn’t reject Natalie when she kisses him in full view of the heartbroken Jill. With their romance in a free fall David and his friend Teddy (Logan Miller, Ultimate Spider-Man) decide to attend a massive blow-out being held at the home of local rich kid Angad (Rohan Kymel) that promises all manners of debauchery. Knowing that Jill will be at the party as well gives David the belief that he can still repair the damage he inflicted.

The Pact

The Pact
DIRECTOR: Nicholas McCarthy
WRITER: Nicholas McCarthy
STARRING: Caity Lotz, Casper Van Dien, Haley Hudson, Agnes Bruckner
IFC Midnight
RELEASE DATE: July 6, 2012 (limited); On VOD now

Ghost stories, tales of the things that go bump in the night, and supernatural thrillers in general will always be popular. They won’t always be good, but they will always attract eager eyes seeking a thrill.

The trick is doing things right, above all other things, but it’s also important to offer your own fresh and unique style. People love to be scared, and a big part of that is properly using your viewers’ own brains against them. Brutal violence can be horrifying, but it’s the unseen, the worst fears you instantly imagine in your own minds, that can be the most effective.

Having always been a huge fan of such movies, I was excited to check out The Pact, an indie supernatural thrill from director Nicholas McCarthy.

DVD
Directed by Errol Morris
Starring Kent Gavin
IFC/MPI Home Video
Release Date: November 1, 2011

With the current state of popular culture looking more and more like the pages of the tabloid rags any person is able to find at the local grocery store, it’s important to see where that storied tradition of possibly slanderous, yet shockingly gripping faux-journalism has come from. You know, it’s always important to know history.

And who better to take something like this on than Errol Morris?

Decades prior to when names like Brett Ratner or Charlie Sheen ever graced a single magazine, a woman by the name of Joyce McKinney came onto the scene, and took the world by storm with her larger than life persona, and even weirder (albeit alleged) actions. A story full of sexually assaulted Mormons, kidnapping, and the occasional whip and chain, McKinney’s story is almost too crazy to be true. But you know what? Not only is it true, but McKinney is more than willing to tell the world all about it.

Breaking Upwards

Breaking Upwards
Directed by: Daryl Wein
Written by: Zoe Lister-Jones, Daryl Wein, Peter Duchan
Starring: Zoe Lister-Jones, Daryl Wein, Andrea Martin, Peter Friedman, Julie White, Olivia Thirlby
IFC Films
Release Date: April 2, 2010 (Limited)

It’s all just part of life as we know it: people enter into relationships, and every single day, many of those relationships hit a wall causing said people to go their separate ways. But what do you do when you realize that the bond you share with another is wearing thin and that it might be time to break up, but neither of you can bare the thought of being apart completely?

Breaking Upwards tells the story of a real-life couple named Daryl (Daryl Wein) and Zoe (Zoe Lister-Jones) who are living in New York. When they enter into the 4-year range of their relationship, they begin to realize certain cracks that simply just can’t be repaired. Another realization that they come to, is that they also can’t be apart from each other long enough to quit their relationship cold turkey, so they need to come up with a plan to make their breakup happen.

The plan? Slowly-but-surely wean themselves away from each other by taking “days off,” doing things much more independently, and even opening up themselves to romantic and sexual situations with others.

Head on over for more and to check out the trailer.
