Game Of Thrones Photographer, Helen Sloan

At this year’s New York Comic-Con earlier this month, I got a chance to meet some incredible women who helped shape and capture the world of one of TV’s biggest shows of all time, Game of Thrones. The HBO series just finished its 8-season run earlier this year and the fantastical series based on The Song of Ice & Fire books by George R.R. Martin is probably the largest endeavor in television history. One of the key women behind the scenes was Helen Sloan, principal unit photographer on the series since day one. At the Insight Editions booth on the NYCC show floor, Sloan was signing exclusive copies of her forthcoming book, The Photography of Game of Thrones, co-written by Michael Kogge and licensed by HBO, and available now for pre-order. I got a chance to speak to Sloan about her time working on the show and her upcoming book.

The HBO series finished its 8-season run earlier this year and the fantastical series based on The Song of Ice & Fire books by George R.R. Martin set new standards for production. DA Cookbook Header

Back in June, BookExpo and BookCon came to Jacob Javitz Convention Center in NYC where book lovers galore swarmed publishing booths, with industry people there for the expo and book fans for the con. One of the most interesting booths I visited was Weldon Owen, an imprint of Insight Editions (of such visually brilliant tomes such as Die Hard: The Ultimate Visual History and The Art Of The Strain). They have a plethora of beautiful books coming out that I am dizzy with excitement about.

Here’s some details about the upcoming books here below.

Game of Thrones: Oathbreaker

With the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones set to finally arrive just one short month from now, excitement is of course off the charts. We saw proof of that in the recently released official trailer for the new season, which blasted HBO’s previous record holder for views by twenty million. On YouTube alone, it’s been viewed over 45 million times.

But while the final season of the series is what fans are most excited about, it’s not the only thing they have to look forward to. Just this week multiple new goodies with ties to the show have been announced. This includes a new board game titled Game of Thrones: Oathbreaker, some new books, and even a John Varvatos clothing line.

You can find more info on all of these offerings below, along with a bonus video which looks at the prosthetics created for the show.

Die Hard: The Ultimate Visual History review

Die Hard: The Ultimate Visual History
Hardcover
By James Mottram & David S. Cohen
Foreword by John McTiernan
Publisher: Insight Editions
Release date: October 30, 2018

In this writer’s opinion, Die Hard is the greatest action film ever made. Based on Roderick Thorp’s Nothing Lasts Forever, John McTiernan’s 1988 classic combined all the elements that make for the perfect action movie: a great protagonist, an equally detestable villain, tremendous action set pieces, and insanely quotable dialogue. It made the careers of its stars, Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman, and it proved that an ’80s blockbuster didn’t need a muscle-bound hero to sell tickets. Willis played John McClane like the everyman who wanted to be a Will Rogers-esque cowboy, and Rickman’s delightfully evil Hans Gruber became the prototype for action bad guys. 30 years and 4 sequels later, James Mottram and David S. Cohen along with Insight Editions bring you Die Hard: The Ultimate Visual History. This epic 230+ page book is the perfect holiday gift for the Die Hard enthusiast in your life.

Harry Potter The Wand Collection Banner

Harry Potter: The Wand Collection
Hardcover
By Monique Peterson
Publisher: Insight Editions
Release date: November 14, 2017

“Every wand has a story of its own,” author Monique Peterson begins in her new book, Harry Potter: The Wand Collection. Admittedly, I’m hooked almost immediately. Still, I am not always one for the many informational index-style books published as part of the Harry Potter world. I like stories, depth, nostalgia in my Harry Potter books.

But Peterson does not disappoint, as this book is as visually appealing and easy to flip through as it is meaningful. There is certainly value added in the background information provided, which covers wand characteristics, the wandmakers, Ollivander, wand selection and Harry’s first wand, wand movement, and wand battles.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Official Grimoire review

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Official Grimoire: A Magickal History of Sunnydale
Hardcover
By A.M. Robinson, Willow Rosenberg
Publisher: Insight Editions
Release Date: October 24, 2017

It’s been only five months since Buffy sacrificed herself to save the world. For five months we’ve wondered if the person who should be here, smiling and laughing and punning in a non-Buffybot way that actually makes sense, is instead suffering in an unimaginable hell dimension. Willow Rosenberg… October 2, 2001

Willow Rosenberg, the witchy brain of the Scooby gang, started chronicling her adventures from around the time Buffy went away, distraught over killing Angel (so beginning of season 3), to her last entry about the “spell to share the power of the chosen one” in season 7. Willow weaves her humor and language (I dub Buffy-speak) to give us her point of view of Oz, meeting Tara, The Gentlemen, Adam, and Tabula Rasa.

More below on Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Official Grimoire: A Magickal History of Sunnydale by Willow Rosenberg aka A.M. Robinson.

“Dear diary, today will be different. It has to be. I will smile, and it will be believable. My smile will say ‘I’m fine, thank you.’ ‘Yes, I feel much better.’ I will no longer be the sad little girl who lost her parents. I will start fresh, be someone new. It’s the only way I’ll make it through.”

Some of the first words of the pilot episode of The Vampire Diaries, so full of hope, was an emergence from grief for a young girl about to meet not one, but the two loves of her life.

Now you too can write down your innermost thoughts in The Vampire Diaries Hardcover Ruled Journal by Insight Editions.

Go Ahead, Make My Drink review

Go Ahead, Make My Drink
60 Recipes Inspired By the Best of Film and Television
Hardcover
Written by Anthony Marinese
Illustrated by Horacio Cassinelli
Publisher: Insight Editions
Publication Date: October 18, 2016
Cover Price: $19.99

Whenever we have a party at my house, we always pick a “signature” drink to make, as if we’re hosting some kind of David Tutera-coordinated extravaganza. I’m constantly scouring the Internet for movie- and TV-themed drink inspirations, which is why Go Ahead, Make My Drink: 60 Recipes Inspired By the Best of Film and Television by Anthony Marinese was a book I was 100 percent interested in checking out.

This 144-page full-color hardcover recipe book from Insight Editions was even cooler than I expected, mainly because a lot of the properties they selected are ones I’m into — Star Trek, Star Wars and the like — but it’s also illustrated! Each drink has its recipe with instructions, accompanied by explanatory text on its inspiration, a photograph of the prepared item, and an adorable full-color illustration by Horacio Cassinelli either of the drink alone or of the beverage with something from the film/TV show, such as a character or prop.
