Week of Geek: Green Lantern

Green Lantern hits theaters this weekend, but there’s still time to catch up on Hal Jordan’s adventures and all the numerous characters that inhabit his corner of the DC Universe before you see the film, which stars Ryan Reynolds in the title role.

Since the creation of the second Green Lantern in 1959, he’s gone on numerous adventures, died, been reborn, been replaced by three other characters, and fought Sinestro more than a few times. However, many of you may have never read any stories with him before, as I had until a few years ago. Where’s the best place to catch up, you may be asking. Well, here are four collections of Green Lantern stories that I recommend reading before you see the movie.

Well, DC Comics just won’t stop, will they? After a brutal couple of days of teasing the comic book fan universe with “new” and “exciting” steps into the “future” of DC Comics, on Thursday, June 2, 2011, they actually started rolling out some of the details about the upcoming “relaunch” of the DC Universe. And regardless of what I may or may not have said regarding the initial announcement, I can’t help but be excited about the second wave of DC Relaunch news. On Thursday, DC released the names and creators of 11 of the 52 new number one comics that are coming out in September, along with cover art, and those are as follows (with added commentary and how excited I am for each):

Justice League #1: Written by Geoff Johns, with art by Jim Lee. I mean, this is a bit obvious, isn’t it? We found out that this was coming on Tuesday, so it’s no surprise to see it listed here. Geoff Johns can handle teams, and who can argue with Jim Lee’s artwork? You can criticize his character redesigns, but there’s no doubt that this book is going to be a heavy hitter from front to back each month. Let’s just hope these two executives are able to give The Justice League the attention it deserves, so it won’t be plagued with delays. Yeah, yeah, I’ll buy it!

Green Lantern, Issue #65Green Lantern #65
Written by Geoff Johns
Art by Doug Mahnke
Cover by Ivan Reis, Oclair Albert
DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
Release Date: April 20, 2011

One of the biggest events in DC Comics has come with the brand new War of the Green Lanterns story which is pitting Green Lanterns against each other. Part five of this epic event lands in Green Lantern #65 in which we see Guy, John, Kyle, and Hal without their rings and donning new rings to try and bring down the renegade guardian Krona who has taken over Oa and returned Parallax to the giant battery and made the rest of the guardians hosts for the other Lantern entities he has stolen.

This issue shows Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner flying a “suped” up shuttle from a Lantern safehouse to OA in order to find Kyle and John who are being tracked by the “infected” corps. This issue feels like a great buddy cop movie but set in space. The end of the book shows Kyle, Hal, John and Guy wearing other Corps rings to stop Krona.

Week of Geek: San Diego Comic Con International 2010

Unfortunately, there wasn’t a lot of big reveals from either DC or Marvel about their upcoming material that had not already been announced in some form or fashion. Therefore, I am just going to review what DC talked about throughout most of their panels at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con.

Two of my most anticipated books that were announced at the Con were Batman Incorporated by Grant Morrison and Flash Speedforce by Geoff Johns. I am super pumped by the descriptions of both of these books and I am already ready to add these books to my pull list. I definitely suggest that everyone keeps their eyes out for these. Also of note but not newly announced is the Batman Earth One by Geoff Johns about a Batman who fails at everything and his gadgets don’t work.

Blackest Night #8Blackest Night #8
Writer: Geoff Johns
Penciller: Ivan Reis
Inker: Oclair Albert & Joe Prado
Colorist: Alex Sinclair
Letterer: Nick J Napolitano
DC Comics
Price: $3.99
Released: March 31, 2010

Well, Blackest Night has finally reached its conclusion, and it’s been a fun ride. Issue #8 is the final issue of the series, so of course we get the big battle, the resolution, and the set up for the next batch of stories.

Was the story as a whole a success? Yes, very much so. A multitude of great character moments: the joy of the Flash as a Blue Lantern; the next great buddy comedy comic in Larfleeze/Lex Luthor: The Orange Couple; Kyle Rayner and the ghosts of dead girlfriends past; and any ton of other things I can’t think of off the top of my head.

I did have some problems with the series as a whole, namely that it did go on for a bit too long (I think it could have stood to be 6 issues instead of 8) and I never felt like I got a good handle on Nekron as the main villain. I wish more time had been spent setting him up and explaining who he is rather than just trotting him out and saying he wants to kill everything. Maybe I need to read the whole story again to get a better feel for his story.
