In Memory of Wes Craven… Thanks for the Screams… classy move by MTV to open the show.

If you have not watched the Scream finale yet, beware of spoilers!

Tonight is the finale to season 1 of MTV’s newest horror series Scream. This season has been a rollercoaster ride for Emma (Willa Fitzgerald). After high school power couple Nina and Tyler (Bella Thorne and Max Lloyd-Jones) are killed Drew Barrymore style, the town of Lakewood is shrouded in mystery and murder on the 20-year anniversary of the notorious Brandon James massacre. Since the opening, we’ve watched poor Riley (Brianne Tju) bleed out on the roof of the police station, quiet Rachel get hanged, and Will (Connor Weil) get his head split in two. Others like Jake (Tom Maden) and Brooke (Carlson Young), have been wounded. There have been plenty of reveals before tonight’s final titular revelation, what with Emma’s mom Maggie (Tracy Middendorf) being not only Brandon James’ love interest, but actually conceiving his child. Audrey and Noah (Bex Taylor-Klaus and John Karna) are the geeky partners in crime who suspected and aided in the capture of the recently escaped convict, former English teacher Seth Branson (Bobby Campo). Who is/are the killer(s)? My pick from very early in the series was podcaster Piper Shaw (Amelia Rose-Blaire), who’s always there to lend support to Emma, and dropped an ominous hint about her dad being killed when she was two. Branson is still a choice as well, as heartthrob Lakewood newcomer Kieran (Amadeus Serafini). Is it one of the characters no one suspects? Will Emma’s dad play a role? With a second season of Scream announced, do we get a resolution, or a cliffhanger?!?! To the finale!

Last week MTV’s Scream made me… well, very angry. Main character Emma (Willa Fitzgerald) who is being both physically and technologically stalked by a masked killer (who by the way has killed 3 of her friends already), AND who just got exposed on the net, as her first sexual encounter went viral decided to… you guessed it… HAVE PUBLIC OUTDOOR SEX IN THE DARK WOODS!!! If nothing else, that should lessen her chances of survival in a show based off a franchise known for its adherence of horror movie “rules.” Then again, Neve Campbell’s Sid did have sex with one of the killers in the original, and she survived the whole series.

After plenty of texting and YouTube uploading throughout the first two episodes, MTV’s Scream finally got “Scream-ish” at the end last week when an ADT-style security worker turned out to be the killer toying with Emma (Willa Fitzgerald) on the phone. The police are no closer to solving Nina’s murder and Audrey (Bex Taylor-Klaus) is distraught over her closet-girlfriend Rachel’s suicide (which was really a murder). Podcaster and serial killer analyst Piper Shaw (Amelia Rose Blaire) arrived looking into Lakewood’s haunted past, and Noah (John Karna) is having too much of a good time providing background and exposition.

MTV’s Scream series got off to a pleasant surprise start last week, and now it’s time to see if the show can keep it’s momentum with episode 2, “Hello Emma.” The show started with Lakewood head bitch Nina (Bella Thorne) filming and uploading a video of Audrey (Bex Taylor-Klaus) having a steamy lesbian makeout session in her car in a parking lot. The other girl Rachel, a cutter, isn’t coping well with the social media backlash, and when “Audrey” calls her, it’s a set up for our killer to hang her from her porch and frame it as suicide.

Scream The TV Series Header

“What’s your favorite scary movie?”

By the mid 1990s, the horror genre was struggling to survive after a decade of cheesy sequels and rip-offs. By the time Scream debuted in theaters in 1996, there had been 22 (!!!) Halloween, Nightmare on Elm St, and Friday the 13th movies combined, and dozens of lazy slasher retreads. But it’s genre icon director Wes Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson, who reinvented the horror genre with Scream, a self referential, homage to the classics of the 70s and early 80s, all the while making fun of itself and its genre’s tired cliches. When top line star, Drew Barrymore was killed off mere minutes in, audiences knew all bets were off. The film series which expanded to a fourth installment in 2011, help make its stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette household names. Writer Williamson went to write many other teen-focused horror films and TV series (The Following just wrapped after 3 seasons).
