Halloween Movie Header Image

Studios don’t need to be in Hall H at the San Diego Comic-Con to make big news. Sometimes, all it takes is a simple announcement. Take Universal Pictures, for example. They announced today the titles and release dates for the two follow-ups to last year’s Halloween, the semi-reboot/sequel to the 1978 iconic slasher film of the same name.

Horror master John Carpenter posted to Twitter, “The saga of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode isn’t over” along with the announcement video, which you can watch here below.

James Gunn

Last summer, James Gunn was in the midst of preparing for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the closing installment of the Guardians trilogy. What happened after that can only be described as a whirlwind of crazy. First he was fired by Disney for some old tweets that were dug up. Then he was hired by WB to write The Suicide Squad, which eventually led to him directing as well. Finally, he was rehired by Disney to finish the Guardians trilogy.

The filmmaker, who is usually vocal on social media, has been silent about those recent events. At least up until now. Gunn is now opening up about what has happened to him, how he thought he would never be rehired, and the status of both The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. See what he had to say below.

Ma Trailer Header

We’ve seen Octavia Spencer in some pretty inspiring and Oscar-winning roles. But never quite something like Ma, which Universal Pictures has released an official trailer for.

In the film Spencer plays as a quiet loner who helps some teenagers buy booze and sees the opportunity to make some new friends by taking them to her basement. Though they suspect something, it turns out she isn’t all that bad. That is until she becomes more aggressive as her popularity starts to rise. And when one of the kids breaks the ground rules of never going upstairs, things in this once small quiet town become really scary. Check out the trailer for Ma below.

Universal Kills Off Connected Dark Universe, Shifts Focus To Individual Monster Projects

Universal Classic Monsters

When it was first announced, a shared universe for rebooted takes on Universal’s classic monsters sounded like it could be fun if all went well. Things did not go well.

The shared universe, which was dubbed the Dark Universe, opened with 2017’s The Mummy starring Tom Cruise. Instead of focusing on the horror, the focus was more on making a CGI-heavy action blockbuster. The movie cost $125 million to produce, and made only $80 million at the domestic box office. A nearly $330 million showing in foreign markets helped to recoup some of those costs, but the Dark Universe was in serious jeopardy of dropping dead a few steps from the starting line.

Now comes word that Universal has indeed killed off the Dark Universe, and will instead shift their focus to rebooting their monsters as individual projects with no ties to a connected universe and, best of all, rooted in horror with no restrictions on the budget, the rating, or the tone.

Jason Blum Offers Terrible Explanation To Why There Are No Female Blumhouse Directors, Later Apologizes

Jason Blum Blumhouse

“There are no female filmmakers interested in the genre” is possibly the worst thing anyone could say when asked why there are no female filmmakers yet for said genre. Patty Jenkins has proven that theory wrong for the comic book genre with Wonder Woman. Jennifer Kent took on the horror genre with The Babadook. So to say there are no female filmmakers interested in genre films would be very incorrect. Plus, it’s 2018.

And yet, the thing that should not be said, continues to be said. This time, Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum tried to explain why there haven’t been any female directors for a Blumhouse film. Let’s just say, it’s an explanation that wasn’t well-received and he has since issued an apology for his comments. More on the report below.

Spectre Dave Bautista as Mr. Hinx

Fantasy Island can be considered as an early inspiration for shows like LOST and Westworld. The 1970s ABC TV show featured an enigmatic man (played by Ricardo Montalbán) who oversaw an island where anyone’s dreams can come true. However, these dreams can come at a huge price. And for some visitors, these dreams could turn into full-on nightmares. Blumhouse will bring that same horror-like vibe to a new iteration to the big screen, which will star Michael Pena and Jimmy O. Yang. Now, they’ve just cast their newest start. New reports says Guardians Of The Galaxy star Dave Bautista is in talks to have a role in the film. More on the story below.

Glass starring Samuel L. Jackson, James McAvoy, and Bruce Willis

M. Night Shyamalan is not one for traditional storytelling. So when he inserted that twist in Split, it showed that the world of Unbreakable was much bigger than we originally thought. That’s because it was revealed that Split took place in the same universe as Unbreakable, and the story would continue on with Glass.

Now Universal has released the newest trailer for Glass starring Samuel L. Jackson, James McAvoy, and Bruce Willis in a film that could change the superhero genre as we know it. Check it out below.
