The 50 Greatest ‘Jaws’ Quotes

jaws-poster-image

As we celebrate America’s birthday today, let’s harken back to a film that remains the classic Summer July 4th picture, the legendary thriller Jaws. Since the summer of 1975, the film has remained a pop culture phenomenon to moviegoers the world over. Like two films in one — the first one on land when the inhabitants of Amity Island are forced to deal with a predator that’s slowly devouring its citizens one by one, to the three men (Chief Brody, Matt Hooper, and salty sea veteran Quint) going out to sea to try and catch the shark singlehandedly — Jaws is an absolute memorable classic of the history of the cinema.

So now, in the film’s chronological order, are 50 of the greatest quotes — highly memorable ones and some obscure ones, but all are benchmarks of the films dialogue and narrative. Some are purposely left out so you can add your favorites below. And “You’re Gonna Need A Bigger Boat” I’ll put right here, it’s one of the most oft-repeated lines of the film, and was ad-libbed by Roy Scheider. Also the centerpiece of the movie, the Indianapolis Speech, is not here either, as that’s an incredible monologue, and almost impossible to pull a quote from. This list could have been 100 quotes probably, but for that, “I’m gonna need a bigger column.”

Must Watch: Young Steven Spielberg & Friends React To ‘JAWS’ Oscar Nominations

Steven Spielberg Jaws Image

A long, long time ago in the year 1976 A.D., far before the internet and video blogging and Skype and Tout and Vine, a young gentleman named Steven Spielberg documented himself and some acquaintances (one of whom is The Godfather and Rocky actor Joe Spinell) watching the 48th annual Academy Awards nominations being announced.

See Spielberg had made a little film called JAWS in 1975, and the movie was up for a potential 11 nominations. You might think that a young up-and-comer such as he was would be overcome with excitement just to get one Oscar nomination, but, as we would all come to learn, this man is a different kind of animal than other directors. The video begins with Spielberg stating quite confidently that they expect the movie to score a clean sweep in all 11 categories, but things don’t quite go as planned.

Continue below now to check out the video of Spielberg and his…eccentric…friends reacting to the the 48th annual Academy Awards nominations.

Trailers from Hell!Trailers from Hell! Volume Two
DVD
Starring Joe Dante, John Landis, Guillermo Del Toro, and Roger Corman
Shout! Factory
Release Date: July 5, 2011

I love DVD collections of old movie trailers. Since 2005, Synapse Films has been releasing volumes of classic grindhouse and drive-in exploitation trailers on DVD under the 42nd Street Forever and early this year unleashed their first Blu-ray edition in the series. One of those discs can provide an entire evening’s entertainment for the true connoisseur of cinema. Independent home video distributors understand the slim but still lucrative market value of a movie trailer collection. If you ask a bunch of people what their favorite part of the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez B-movie double feature homage Grindhouse was, chances are most of them will say they loved the spoof trailers directed by Eli Roth, Rob Zombie, Edgar Wright, and Rodriguez. Movie geek meccas like the Alamo Drafthouse and the New Beverly Cinema often program vintage trailers to go along with that night’s film selection. People still make their old trailer compilations for fun. Roth even talked about making a feature film in the form of a reel of trailers.

Trailers from Hell is a highly-addictive website where film directors, writers, and producers provide introductions and commentaries for the trailers to some of their favorite films. From beloved classics to obscure cult flicks, from Oscar-winning epics to kinetic blasts of pure psychotronic insanity, there is no vintage preview that the TFH crew will not unearth and gab about to the delight of movie geeks everywhere. They’ve even started releasing DVD collections of the finest trailers and commentaries on their site that they could secure the rights to through the amazing Shout! Factory, a true friend to film fans with expansive DVD and Blu-ray libraries (and this is the part where yours truly sheepishly raises his hand). So with that in mind I bring you Trailers from Hell! Volume Two.
