57th Annual Grammy Awards - Grammys 2015

The 87th Annual Grammy Awards took place on Sunday night, February 8, 2015, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, and was broadcast live on CBS on the east coast (the west coast had a tape delay). There were stand-out performances at the Grammys by AC/DC, Jeff Lynne’s ELO, Annie Lennox, and Madonna, with the big winners of the night being Beck, Sam Smith, Beyoncé, and Pharrell Williams.

Below are some of the highlights of the evening, along with the full list of Grammy winners at the end.

Jeff Lynne ELO with perform at the 2015 Grammys

UPDATED WITH VIDEO of the performance – see bottom of this post.

Jeff Lynne, who carved a niche and added some electronically classical elements to rock and roll with the hit after hit 1970s ensemble ELO (Electric Light Orchestra), is set to perform tonight at the 57th Grammy Awards, which will air on CBS. Lynne’s ELO will be performing with Ed Sheeran, the British born latest musical flavor of the month. Alongside the pair will be talent like the legendary piano jazz man Herbie Hancock, guitarist John Mayer, and Questlove from The Roots.

No word on what the ELO lineup will be performing at the Grammys, but with the inclusion of Lynne, it’s a safe bet to say that an ELO tune or two might be heard on the stage, especially when that band had reunited and played its first live show in almost 30 years this past autumn.

All Over The World: The Very Best Of ELO

Earlier this week, our own Mr. Babyman heaped a lot of praise on the ELO compilation Playlist: The Very Best Of Electric Light Orchestra, which is on sale in MP3 format for only $5 through the end of the month. Now, Amazon is offering up another Electric Light Orchestra collection, All Over The World: The Very Best Of ELO, for only $3.99 through this weekend.

A lot of the songs are duplicated on both albums, but today’s deal has 20 tracks, including some of the selections from the Xanadu soundtrack (which I’ve been obsessed with since childhood, and therefore highly recommend, yes, seriously). Perhaps you think you don’t know ELO, but once you hear this stuff, you’ll recognize it: “Evil Woman,” “Don’t Bring Me Down,” “Turn To Stone,” “Strange Magic” – you know it.

Browse all 1,000 albums on sale this month for only $5 each, as well as several albums on sale this week for only $2.99 each.

Playlist: The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra

This month, the Electric Light Orchestra compilation album Playlist: The Very Best Of Electric Light Orchestra is on sale for only $5 in MP3 format.

This 15-song 2008 compilation brings together what I’d consider the essential hits from this working-class Birmingham rock combo led by frontman Jeff Lynne (who would later produce successful albums by The Traveling Wilburys, Brian Wilson, Tom Petty, and none other than The Beatles). ELO disrupted the drums/guitar/bass rock combo by introducing actual classical arrangements into their music. You can hear this predominantly on this best of album in songs like “Evil Woman,” “Can’t Get It Out Of My Head,” “Do Ya,” and “Livin’ Thing.” All the rock analysis aside, this is a great price for a must-have compilation, and if you don’t currently have “Mr. Blue Sky” somewhere in your music collection, it’s a travesty that must be corrected immediately.
