The Darkest Minds

A couple of years back now we found out that Kung Fu Panda 2 and Kung Fu Panda 3 director Jennifer Yuh Nelson had signed on to direct The Darkest Minds. The movie, which was written by Chad Hodge (Good Behavior, Wayward Pines), is an adaptation of author Alexandra Bracken‘s novel of the same name, which is part of an existing trilogy (with a new book on the way) that will no doubt be used in sequels should this perform well at the box office.

Now 20th Century Fox has released an official trailer for the movie, which stars Amandla Stenberg, Harris Dickinson, Skylan Brooks, Miya Cech, Mandy Moore, and Gwendoline Christie. Producing is Shawn Levy (Stranger Things, Arrival) and Dan Levine (Arrival, Along Came Polly).

The Darkest Minds

Jennifer Yuh Nelson—the assistant designer who moved up into the role of character designer and storyboard artist (while also debuting as a director on a few episodes of the animated TV series Spawn), and then up again to story artist, and then again to head of story on the original Kung Fu Panda before taking another big step up into the role of director on Kung Fu Panda 2 and Kung Fu Panda 3 (along with co-director Alessandro Carloni)—is now set to make her live-action debut on Darkest Minds for 20th Century Fox.

The movie is based on the “Darkest Minds” young adult book trilogy by author Alexandra Bracken. The book series is described as “combining superhero conventions with tones of coming-of-age stories such as Stand By Me and post-apocalyptic survivor tales like The Walking Dead.”

Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, and David Cross all return to voice their characters, while Bryan Cranston, Kate Hudson, and J.K. Kung Fu Panda 3

DreamWorks Animation has released a new trailer for Kung Fu Panda 3, the trilogy-maker in their hit animated franchise.

The trailer is brief, but features a nice tip of the hat to Star Wars. It involves Po (voiced once again by Jack Black) and his father Li (Bryan Cranston), a reunion that was teased at the end of Kung Fu Panda 2.

You can watch the new trailer and see a poster for the movie below.

It’s already been four years since Kung Fu Panda 2 arrived in theaters, believe it or not, on its way to $665.6 million worldwide.

Kung Fu PandaAfter raking in almost $630 million worldwide, it was highly expected that Kung Fu Panda would offer up at least one sequel. DreamWorks SKG has announced that they will do just that, beginning production in 2009 and aiming at a June 3, 2011 release date.

Returning are Jack Black and Angelina Jolie among other voice cast members. The only big difference is the director; taking over the helm will be Jennifer Yuh Nelson, who worked the head of story/story artist on the first film. Her only directing experience so far was on the 1997 Spawn TV series. No word on if the original writers will be working on the project, but I’m assuming they will be.
