You Were Never Really Here review

You Were Never Really Here
Written & directed by Lynne Ramsay
Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Judith Roberts, Ekaterina Samsonov, John Doman, Alex Manette
Amazon Studios
Release Date: April 6, 2018

It seems like he is merely existing. His beard, unkempt with tinges of gray in it, is slowly beginning to swallow his face. He looks drastically out of shape. We see him prowling around at night with no oomph in his step. He’s simply there, probably wishing he wasn’t. More than likely he’s been faltering for a long time now just waiting to fade away, overwhelmed by a past that has crippled him mentally and sucked a good chunk of life out of him physically. His name is Joe (Joaquin Phoenix) and he’s a gun…or should I say hammer for hire.

The Killing Joke

The history of the Joker is never told the same way, but there is one arc fans refer to as the definitive backstory for the Clown Prince of Crime, Batman: The Killing Joke. So it should come as no surprise that director Todd Philips would want to look at it for his Joker origins film.

A new report says Phillips will be drawing some inspiration from The Killing Joke, in which a failed comedian falls into a vat of acid bleaching his skin and warping his mind, for the still untitled Joker origins film. More on the story below.

Joaquin Phoenix in Inherent Vice

Warner Bros. is continuing to develop their DC film slate in the most interesting of ways. In addition to the number of DCEU films currently in development, they have launched a new series of films that are not set in the DCEU. These standalone films will be much darker takes on the characters involved. And it all starts with an untitled Joker origins film.

Written and directed by Todd Phillips, the film will be separate from the other DCEU films. The project was first announced late last summer. Jared Leto is still signed on to play the Clown Prince of Crime, having first appeared in Suicide Squad, and is expected to reprise his role in the Joker and Harley Quinn spinoff and other DCEU related titles. However, the plan for this movie was to cast someone else in the role. And now it looks like the director has found his actor. According to new reports, Joaquin Phoenix is close to inking a deal that will see him become the Joker.

Joaquin Phoenix To Reunite With M. Night Shyamalan For New Movie

Joaquin Phoenix

The name M. Night Shyamalan is associated with a few things, most notably “twists” and as of late “bad movies.” Well considering his Fox drama Wayward Pines was a critical and commercial success, and The Visit perfectly fits with Blumhouse’s horror films on a frugal budget, the filmmaker has seemingly bounced back from a couple of down years. With The Visit completely finished, the film has been making the early screening rounds and has been met with rave reviews. As such, Shyamalan is eager to get back to work, once again with Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions for another horror film on a frugal budget.

This time he would be reuniting with an actor who he has worked with a couple of times in the past. According to new reports, Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to reunite with Shyamalan for an all new horror flick. More on this story below.

Irrational Man trailer header

Sony Pictures Classics has just released the first trailer for Woody Allen‘s Irrational Man starring Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Jamie Blackley, and Parker Posey. In the film, Phoenix plays Abe Lucas, a habitually gloomy philosophy professor who can’t write, can’t teach, and “couldn’t remember the reason for living, and when I did it wasn’t convincing.” But when a young student (Stone) attends one of his classes, he finds new purpose in life. Based on the trailer, the film pretty much uses the same tropes and plot devices Allen has used before in his previous films. But Posey’s character could put a small twist on things.

Check out the trailer below.
