Okay, first off, if I have to try to convince you to buy a comic that contains eight premiere issues for a measly six bucks then I might just have to reassess what I am doing here.

I have reviewed any number of these titles at different times and I cannot even begin to stress to you how great of a deal this is. Colored by Michael McElveen
Cover by Joelle Jones
Danger Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99

It’s a wonderful thing when a Kickstarter can get the financial backing it’s looking to create its project. It’s equally as fantastic when the said Kickstarter is creative, original, and engrossing. Curse of the Vessel #1, a comic by Michael Leal with illustrations from Mike Wilson and colors from Michael McElveen is one such endeavor.

Vincent, a hired thug for the mob boss, Eddie Roman, is sent to make the local magic shop owner, Mr. Zicari, reconsider an offer he had recently refused. When things go awry, Vincent ends up in a motel with a strange symbol branded into his chest, forcing him to recall the events that led him to his current surroundings. Vincent quickly discovers that he has become the vessel for lost souls seeking another chance at life. With this newfound curse, Vincent’s body is unwillingly forced into dangerous situations with the wrong sorts of people.

When witches go to war, no one is safe. Oni Press offers up a dose of bloody mayhem in Helheim, a new epic ongoing series from creator Cullen Bunn and artist Joëlle Jones. In issues 1-4, a small band of Vikings struggle against savage invaders and beast men alike, while the looming threat of two opposing witches strangle all with fear.

The Viking named Rikard has died. Using his death to her advantage, Rikard’s lover, Bera the witch, has revived him, creating a Draugr — a massive reanimated, grotesque monster forged with appendages from other dead creatures — to do her bidding. Now shunned by his entire village, including his warrior father, the new Rikard is sent out by Bera to kill the followers of her rival: an old witch named Groa; however, when Rikard meets a kind young girl who not only shows no fear of him, but actually talks with and teaches him as though he were a regular man, Rikard begins to take matters into his own hands — waging a new war against both powerful witches.

This month we get to see Zoey Redbird complete her initiation into the five elements in House Of Night #5. Her lesson for the last element, spirit, is one that holds a lot of meaning for her. Not everyone is able to survive the change from human to vampyre, and it takes four years of training to do so. We learn that the stress on their bodies and minds can take a toll.

Zoey spends this issue coming to terms with a choice she made prior to her training at the House of Night. Having imprinted on someone from her past, it seems only fitting that the story of Hippolyte and Herakles contained the same problem. Learning from the mistakes of vampyres past has aided Zoey several times and this is no exception.

Imagine my surprise when I started reading this comic, one that I chose on a whim, and found it’s based on a young adult book series that I used to sell tons of during the last few years my bookstore was open. Now imagine my further surprise when I realized that I liked it! It’s got its quirks, but House of Night #1 is a pretty fun read.

Now, I went into this knowing exactly zilch about the books, so no preconceived notions about the characters or setting. Add to that the fact that there is absolutely no back story or prologue and you have a blank slate on which to create this series. P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast were familiar to me, but Kent Dalian is someone I didn’t know.
