John C. McGinley interview

For the third straight year, New York Comic-Con welcomed the cast of Stan Against Evil. Season 3 debuts on Halloween night on IFC and Stan Miller himself, John C. McGinley, was at NYCC Thursday along with co-star Janet Varney and show creator Dana Gould. McGinley is a veteran of the big and small screens with over 100 credits on IMDb, including blockbuster films like Se7en and Platoon and starring roles like Dr. Cox on Scrubs for nine seasons. Stan Miller is a curmudgeonly widower dealing with the loss of his wife, raising a “unique” daughter (Deborah Baker Jr.) and battling a demonic curse out to kill him in Willard’s Mill, New Hampshire. We got a chance to talk to the star Thursday afternoon about the upcoming season, his character, and career.

Interview with John C. McGinley

New York Comic-Con 2017 is now officially history. On Thursday, October 5th, the Big Apple welcomed back the 4-day geek spectacular emanating from its home base at the Jacob Javits Convention Center. In recent years, NYCC has grown so huge that it’s spread to include the theatre at Madison Square Garden, Hammerstein Ballroom, and even the Stephen A. Schwarzman Library building. Hammerstein opened its NYCC run with a tour de force day which included the cast and creator of IFC’s Stan Against Evil. Creator and writer Dana Gould was joined by stars John C. McGinley and Janet Varney as they prepped fans for the upcoming second season, which debuts on November 1st.

John C. McGinley has been in movies and on TV for over 30 years. He played a small role in Oliver Stone’s 1986 Best Picture-winning Vietnam film Platoon and went on to act in several more Stone films. He is best known for his decade-long stint on the television series Scrubs (2001-10) as the easily irritable, human index of female names, Dr. Perry Cox. Last season on Stan, we met his newest somehow surlier character. Stan Miller is a guy who wants nothing more than to be left alone, but must spend his days dealing with annoyances from Sheriff Evie Barret, his daughter, and the 170+ demons haunting Willard’s Mill. We spoke to McGinley about Stan and his development in Season 2.

NYCC 2017: Stan Against Evil panel

It’s that special time of year again, New York Comic-Con has arrived. Running through Sunday, the annual event once contained to the Jacob Javits Convention Center now sprawls across Manhattan. Professional Day opened at 9:30 AM at the New York Public Library located at 5th avenue and 42nd Street and events are also emanating from the theater at Madison Square Garden and Hammerstein Ballroom. I spent most of Day 1 located at Hammerstein with the gang from IFC’s Stan Against Evil. The horror comedy begins its second season on November 1st, and creator, writer, and producer Dana Gould as well as stars Janet Varney (Evie) and Stan himself, John C. McGinley took the stage to entertain the crowd.

‘Stan Against Evil’ Renewed for Season 2!

Stan Against Evil Header

Horror is this “it” thing on TV right now, and horror-comedy is even better. Ash vs. Evil Dead just wrapped a second great season on Starz, and has already been renewed for season 3. Scream Queens is blending horror and insane comedy on FOX Tuesday nights. This fall, IFC joined the party with Dana Gould’s Stan Against Evil which premiered in early November. I watched the pilot back at NYCC in October and it instantly hooked me. Stan is played by John C. McGinley who brings the same rough sarcasm he did as Dr. Perry Cox on Scrubs only this time with a shade of melancholy. The show ran a limited run of 8 half hour episodes, run back to back for four straight weeks. IFC has just renewed Stan for a second season.

The Belko Experiment Header

Team building exercises can be the worst. But James Gunn has found a way to make it just a little bit entertaining by turning those team building exercises into a bloody, twisted game of survival in The Belko Experiment.

While the filmmaker was too busy working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to direct it himself, he handed over his script to director Greg McLean (Wolf Creek). Now we are finally getting our first look at the film in an all-new trailer. Check it out below.

That means him and new sheriff, Evie Barret (Janet Varney). Using his demon hunting wife’s spellbook and weapons, they’ve managed to do a decent job of keeping evil from taking over Willard’s Mill. Debuting at NYCC, Stan Against Evil was created by Dana Gould, former writer for The Simpsons. Imagine your significant other, your soulmate, your one and only has passed away. Now imagine that in the aftermath you discover a secret that completely changes everything. That is what is happening to Sheriff Stan Miller (John C. McGinley) of Willard’s Mill, New Hampshire. Now alone with his odd daughter Denise (Deborah Baker Jr.) he is fired after an incident at his wife, Claire’s funeral. Stan has old world views and is thus aghast when a woman, Evie Barret (Janet Varney) replaces him as Sheriff. Even harder to accept and understand is finding out his wife was actually a demon hunter, protecting him and the town from a legendary curse. With her gone, demons are out in droves to put Stan, Evie and all law enforcement.

Spoilers below for Stan Against Evil.
