G.I. Joe: Retaliation - The Rock and Channing Tatum

Paramount Pictures saw some box office success in G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and now they want more. The studio is starting off by signing on Jon Chu to direct the tentatively titled G.I. Joe 3. Little is known about the plot for the sequel, but producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura stated that he did want to see more ninja story in the sequel, which probably means we will see more of Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow.

Chu was a surprise choice to direct Retaliation, given that most of the films that he directed before it were music and dance related. After all he was known for directing films like Step Up 2: The Streets and Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, films that have little to no action sequences.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation

Obviously a nine-month delay didn’t hurt the box office gross for G.I. Joe Retaliation. The Jon Chu film was the number one film at the box office earning upwards to $41 million, and since those kinds of numbers bring a smile to any studio head, it’s no surprise that there is going to be a G.I. Joe 3 in the works.

Variety confirmed the story, which seemed highly unlikely given the critical reaction the film received when it was originally scheduled for a summer 2012 release and the nine-month delay that was ordered for the film to undergo 3D conversions. But since the film was successful, not so much from a critical standpoint, we are getting a third G.I. Joe film.

Jon Chu Replaces David Slade As Director of Matched

Back in September we reported that Disney was planning to adapt Ally Condie’s Matched, a young adult novel whose characters live in a dystopian world where a group called The Society makes every single decision for its people. At first David Slade was tapped to direct Matched, but according to THR, G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon Chu has now been hired to direct the film.

Chu is building quite the resume, having already helmed a few musically themed projects, including the Justin Bieber doc Never Say Never and his first action film G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which is due out in theaters this March. THR reports that even though Chu is going to direct Matched, this will not impede on his duties over at Sony, where he is directing a reboot of Masters of the Universe. However, the lack of developments with the project may give way to Matched being Chu’s next directorial effort.

He-Man Image

A new movie based on the popular Mattel toy He-Man has been in the works for more years than anyone who’s been excited to see the movie cares to admit. For a number of reasons things just haven’t worked out, whether it was budgetary issues, script/story problems, and so on.

Last we heard, G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon Chu was in talks to be the next to take a swing at making a new He-Man movie, titled Masters of the Universe, a reality. Now Chu is talking about his excitement and plans for the movie, and you can read what he’s saying below.

Cobra Commander

Those among us who were looking forward to seeing Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Bruce Willis team up to kick some Cobra ass next month in the increasingly badass-looking sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation are in for a mighty disappointment. Nikki Finke at Deadline reported today that Paramount Pictures has decided to pull Retaliation from its June 29 release date and delay it until March 29 of next year so that the film can undergo a 3D conversion.

“We’re going to do a conscientious 3D job because we’ve seen how it can better box office internationally,” an unnamed executive at Paramount told Finke. “Jim Cameron did all of Titanic‘s 3D in post — and look how well that movie turned out.”

Step Up 3 Blu-ray DVDStep Up 3
Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo
Directed by Jon Chu
Starring Sharni Vinson, Rick Malambri, Adam G. Sevani, Alyson Stoner, Keith Stallworth
Touchstone Pictures
Release Date: December 21, 2010

Full disclosure before I begin this review. I’m a fan of dance. Pretty much any type of dance. Line dancing, ball room dancing, salsa, hip-hop, you name the body gyration and I probably like it. So You Think You Can Dance is a staple in my household and Dance Central is the reason I bought a Microsoft Kinect. I Tivo’d the new Paula Abdul dance show, Live To Dance, the other night. I’ve also enjoyed the previous Step Up films for the very reason they should be enjoyed, THE DANCING.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s talk Step Up 3, shall we? Obviously, being titled, Step Up 3, it’s the third installment in the Step Up trilogy (and the first to be shot in 3D). The film follows Moose (Adam Sevani) and Camille Gage (Alyson Stoner) as they head to New York University, the former of whom is majoring in electrical engineering after promising his mother that he would not dance anymore. However, he soon stumbles upon a dance battle, meeting Luke (Rick Malambri) and his House of Pirates dance crew and later teaming up with them to compete in the World Jam dance contest against their rivals, the House of Samurai dance crew.
