Yesterday

Yesterday
Director: Danny Boyle
Writer: Richard Curtis
Cast: Himesh Patel, Lily James, Kate McKinnon, Ed Sheeran
Distributor: Universal Pictures
Rated PG-13 | Minutes: 157
Release Date: June 28, 2019

A world where The Beatles do not exist would be a strange one. But it is one small part of the entire premise of the fantastical romantic comedy Yesterday. Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Richard Curtis, the film explores such a world where only one man remembers the music of The Beatles, and how his life will dramatically change. But underneath such a simple premise lies a sweet love story and a quandary of what would happen if you had all that knowledge yet you knew that it wasn’t truly your work.

Though it may be narratively flawed by not fully exploring an interesting concept and plays it safe at times with the rom-com aspects, Yesterday relies on the direction of Boyle and Curtis’s script – though their voices may inadvertently clash at times – along with Lily James‘ cheery performance to carry the film all the way to end. My full review below.

Yesterday

There isn’t any doubt that The Beatles are the source of inspiration for many music artists today. From “Hey Jude” to “Yesterday” and “Here Comes The Sun” to “Let It Be,” these are just only a few of the many hits the British band has earned throughout their career.

But Danny Boyle‘s latest film, Yesterday, written by Richard Curtis (Love Actually, About Time), asks the question: what if The Beatles didn’t exist, and you were the only person who knew about them and their songs? Would you use that knowledge responsibly or would you use it to gain fame and fortune. That is what we can expect to see in the upcoming music comedy that stars Himesh Patel, Lily James, Kate McKinnon, and Ed Sheeran. Check out the trailer below.

The Spy Who Dumped Me

Spoofing the spy genre isn’t something that is particularly new. But that doesn’t make it any less funny. Especially when you get some great talent like Kate McKinnon and Mila Kunis. The two will be paired up in the new spy comedy The Spy Who Dumped Me – get it, it’s a riff on the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me.

Lionsgate has dropped the first trailer for the film. In it, Audrey (Kunis) and Morgan (McKinnon) are two best friends who get wrapped up in an international conspiracy when Audrey finds out that her former boyfriend is actually a spy. Check out the trailer below.

From beloved children’s books to an educationally delightful PBS show, The Magic School Bus has taken kids on wacky field trips that explore the human body, space, and beyond. Now Netflix is taking the show and giving it a reboot, with The Magic School Bus Rides Again.

For the reboot, Ms. Frizzle (Lily Tomlin) is giving the keys to her younger sister (voiced by Kate McKinnon). Even the theme song is getting revamped from the one any only Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Check out the first trailer for The Magic School Bus Rides Again below.

Dan Aykroyd Blames Director Paul Feig For ‘Ghostbusters’ Costly Reboot

Ghostbusters Stars Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, and Kate McKinnon

Last year, a new all-female reboot of Ghostbusters hit theaters. Though it grossed $229 million worldwide at the box office, that was off of a $144 million production budget. So adding the millions that was put into the marketing campaign, the film was barely a mild success. Thus, there will probably be no sequel. The film was fine, and with the way it ended, there was plenty of stories left to tell. But it all comes down to money, and if there isn’t any, then it isn’t worth it for the studio to take such a risk.

Now one of the Ghostbusters alum believes he knows why the reboot didn’t work. According to Dan Aykroyd, it was director Paul Feig. More on the story, below.

“Party like your job depends on it.”

Directed by Will Speck and Josh Gordon (Blades of Glory, The Switch), Office Christmas Party is like its star, T.J. Miller: loud, obnoxious, occasionally funny, and best when loaded on drugs and alcohol.

When Zenotek CEO Carol Vanstone (Jennifer Aniston) tries to close her hard-partying brother’s branch in Chicago, he (Clay Vanstone, played by Miller) and Chief Technical Officer Josh Parker (Jason Bateman) must rally their co-workers and host an epic non-denominational holiday mixer Christmas party to woo potential client Walter Davis (The People v. O.J. Simpson‘s Courtney B. Vance) and close a sale that will save their jobs.

OFFICE CHRISTMAS PARTY header

The holiday season is upon us, and that means it’s time to party and celebrate the end of the year. And what kind of celebration would it be without a Christmas party, especially the kind of party that involves drinking, physical humor, and other unsightly vulgarity? Paramount Pictures has released the latest trailer for Josh Gordon & Will Speck‘s Office Christmas Party, starring Jason Bateman, Olivia Munn, T. J. Miller, Jillian Bell, Courtney B. Vance, Kate McKinnon and Jennifer Aniston. As you might expect with the cast and the title, this will be the kind of office Christmas party that everyone will be talking about, that is, if they’ll be able to recall it after the amount of alcohol they’ve consumed.

Check out the full trailer below.

Ghostbusters 2016

It has been an uphill battle for the Sony marketing team ever since the first trailer for the Ghostbusters reboot came out. But when the first box office numbers came out, studio execs were quick to hail the film as a success and said that there would be a sequel without actually confirming that there would be one.

Now there is a sense that they may have jumped the gun a bit as a new report says Sony is possibly going to lose up to $70 million on the movie. More on the story below.
