Cloud Atlas Header

A slew of new promotional material for Cloud Atlas is hitting the marketing wire, and it does a great job of showing the ambitious scope of The Wachowskis‘ latest film. The project is difficult to describe largely because it features a large cast playing as multiple characters cross various time periods. In the film these actors play a variety of roles, some which requires the actor to play something outside of their own race, age, and even sexuality. Now seven promotional banners put these roles and time periods up on display. Check out the seven new banners, plus two tv spots here below.

There has been positive buzz circling around Cloud Atlas since it made its official debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. Critics have praised The Wachowskis (Andy and Lana) and Tom Twyker for creating a movie that is not limited to one genre. Others have praised the make-up used to change the actors’ appearances.

Watch Now: ‘They Live’ Panel Discussion From Texas Frightmare Weekend

They Live

I don’t know if John Carpenter, one of my favorite directors of all time, will ever again make a movie as good as the genre classics he used to blast out back in the golden days before old school directors like him would be forced to slog away in the salt mines of direct-to-video filmmaking. But during that wonderful near-two decade period when he was without equal in the ranks of America’s finest and most prolific directors, Carpenter made many classics that would endear him forever to fans of science-fiction, horror, and action cinema, and his 1988 film They Live was possibly the last truly great feature he would ever sit behind the camera on.

Held over the weekend in Dallas, TX and co-sponsored by Rue Morgue Magazine, the horror convention Texas Frightmare Weekend hosted a panel discussion with the three stars of They Live – former WWF (now WWE) superstar Roddy Piper, Keith David (who also co-starred in another Carpenter classic – 1982’s The Thing), and 1980’s genre mainstay Meg Foster (Blind Fury, Welcome to Arrow Beach). Rue Morgue’s managing editor Dave Alexander moderated the hour-long panel.

You can watch a 16-minute compilation of highlights from the spirited discussion here below.

The Cabin In the Woods

Though the movie was finished filming in 2009 and originally slated for release in 2010, The Cabin in the Woods is just now giving us a first official trailer.

The movie, which is written and produced by Joss Whedon and written and directed by Drew Goddard, fell victim to MGM’s major financial woes, and like many others it found itself stashed away in the attic, left to gather dust.

But thankfully for all of us, Lionsgate eventually showed up to save the day and set a new release date of April 13, 2012.

You can check out the first trailer for The Cabin in the Woods by continuing on below.

It’s easy to see why Hollywood loves a good superhero story. The genre has become so popular over the past couple of years, it’s no wonder why everyone is in such a rush to strike while the iron is hot and cash in on the trend. While the story in a superhero movie like The Dark Knight is a great one, providing the essential themes of good versus evil and the power of one man, etc., The Cape tries to follow that same method for success.

The difference between these two is that the television series The Cape, which debut on Sunday January 9, 2011, isn’t The Dark Knight. Not that it’s really intending to be, but it’s not even as good as other superhero television shows.

The premise for The Cape sounded like something that, on paper, should be a great execution of the genre. A cop gets framed for a crime he didn’t commit! He turns over to a life of heroics to protect the ones he loves!

But that sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Maybe even a little bit too familiar?
