Ghost #1Ghost #1
Written by Kelly Sue DeConnick
Art by Phil Noto
Letters by Richard Starkings and Comicraft
Covers by Phil Noto & Alex Ross
Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: October 24, 2012
Cover Price: $2.99

Kelly Sue DeConnick is, needless to say, a fantastic writer. I just don’t know if Ghost was right for her. You’d think it would be a no-brainer. A woman who’s great at writing strong female leads should be the perfect fit, right? Unfortunately, she doesn’t quite hit the mark with this issue.

First off, for a first issue, it’s not really a great jumping on point. It feels like you’re coming in during the middle of a story. Beyond that, the dialogue is entertaining and the characters are fun. I just wish it was more of an introduction than it is.

While off at wrestling bootcamp, I learned a many things. I learned the art of the double turn, how to properly hip toss my opponents, while transitioning into the “No Lock.” Yes, I learned a lot of things, but the one think I didn’t learn was how to manage my time properly. Still working on that, but until then, let’s talk about some comic books since that’s what you’re all here for. Ladies and gentlemen, this ain’t ballet! This… is… THE GoD LIST!!!

Marvel Comics: Captain Marvel #1Captain Marvel #1
Written by Kelly Sue DeConnick
Art by Dexter Soy
Cover by Dan McGuinness, Dexter Vines, and Javier Rodriguez
Marvel Comics
Release Date: July 18, 2012
Cover Price: $2.99

Carol Danvers, aka Ms. Marvel, is a B-list Avenger who Brian Michael Bendis has actually been able to make quite interesting over the last few years in the Avengers main book. She was an Air Force pilot who was inadvertently imprinted with the DNA of a Kree warrior named Mar-Vel, also known as Captain Marvel. Along with his DNA she of course picked up all of his abilities: super-strength, flight, near invulnerability, and energy manipulation. She gets another stab at a solo book here with Captain Marvel #1.

This new comic is set up to reinvent her and to bring the Captain Marvel name to the forefront of the Marvel U again. She has a new costume and a new hairdo to go along with the name change from Ms. Marvel to Captain Marvel. The story is actually really simple in this first issue. Captain America sets out to convince Danvers that it’s time she takes on the moniker of Captain Marvel, but she is reluctant to take on the now-dead Kree warrior’s name. Captain America has a simple but elegantly delivered opinion on the difference in the hero name and the real name that sets Danvers to considering it.

Look guys, we all know that comic books are totally awesome. That’s the whole reason why we put out this here GoD List every single week. There’s always a lot of stuff to look forward to, and sometimes we can’t get it all together. This week, though, my mind is completely on The Dark Knight Rises, and I’m sure you feel the same. However, we want you to read comics, so it’s time to put TDKR on the back burner for just a moment, and then we’ll move on to more Batman talk later in the day. You ready to do this? I’m ready to do this. Henchman isn’t here this week, so let’s get to it!

Marvel Comics To Publish ‘Castle’ Graphic Novel

CasleMarvel made a big announcement on Monday that they will be releasing a graphic novel based on the popular ABC detective show Castle. Titled Castle: Richard Castle’s Deadly Storm, the 112-page hardcover will feature a story written by Brian Michael Bendis (Powers, Ultimate Comics Spider-Man) and Kelly Sue DeConnick (Osborn), and will feature art by Lan Medina (Fables) with a cover by Carlos Pagulayan (Hulk).

The story will center on the character of Derrick Storm, the fictional detective created by the fictional writer Richard Castle (played by Nathan Fillion on the television series). So it is not a story about the characters from the show, rather it is about characters created by the characters from the show. This won’t be the first time that ABC Studios has released material “written” by Richard Castle, as there are 3 mystery novels already available. However, this will be the first time a novel has been released featuring the character that made Castle famous (on the show).

Axel Alonso, Marvel Entertainment Editor in Chief, said of the project, “It’s exciting to bring the Derrick Storm novels to life for the first time ever. Whether you’re new to the world of “˜Castle’ or a long time fan, there’s something for everyone in CASTLE: RICHARD CASTLE’S DEADLY STORM””and it’s the kind of book that reaffirms Marvel’s commitment to creating new fans of comic books.”
