Detective Pikachu

Warner Bros. and Legendary could have gone the traditional route with their first live-action Pokémon movie by adapting the story of the boy on a journey to collect all Pokémon species. But they didn’t. Instead, they are adapting one of the franchise’s many spinoffs, Detective Pikachu.

In the film adaptation, we see Justice Smith play Tim Goodman, a human, whose father has suddenly gone missing. But when a wise-cracking Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds) comes in to help him, they uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe. Check out the newest trailer for the film below.

There is plenty of visually pleasing aesthetics to look at when seeing a film like Wes Anderson‘s Isle Of Dogs. The director’s latest stop-motion animation effort has all of his signature symmetrical, camera-panning style and deadpan humor. It also happens to be one of Anderson’s most politically charged films by addressing some very serious themes that affect us today. Unfortunately, none of that takes away from the fact that there is some appropriation going on, with the added white savior factor, and that the Japanese characters are playing supporting roles in a film set entirely in Japan.

Therein lies one of the greatest problems of this film. How much of it is Anderson paying homage to a culture by using the beautiful aesthetics and Akira Kurosawa inspirations, and how much of it is his signature being written over a culture? It’s the paradox that just keeps on giving. Check out my full review here below.

Isle of Dogs Featurette

Stop-motion animation is a very taxing medium, but the pay off can be glorious if it is well-executed. Wes Anderson, the filmmaker known for quirky out of the box filmmaking, returns to stop-motion with Isle of Dogs. In the film, dogs are supposedly carriers of a disease and are all banished to a garbage dump known as Trash Island.

Now we are getting a closer look at how this film came to be from those who voice the characters in a newly released cast interviews featurette. The only thing is the cast is not speaking through their respective human forms, but through their cuddly canine characters. Quite a fun way to push a movie and get everyone interested. Check it out below.

Detective Pikachu

If the early cast for the Pokemon movie Detective Pikachu didn’t catch you off guard at first, then this next new cast member will be even more of a shocker. Following the casting of Ryan Reynolds as the title character comes Ken Watanabe.

That’s right, the live-action Pokemon movie is very much real, and it is adding actors and actresses that will make up a pretty eclectic cast. More on the story below.

Transformers: The Last Knight feat Bumblebee

Transformers: The Last Knight
Director: Michael Bay
Screenwriters: Matt Holloway, Ken Nolan, Art Marcum
Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Anthony Hopkins, Josh Duhamel, Laura Haddock, Isabela Moner, Jerrod Carmichael, Jim Carter, John Goodman, Ken Watanabe, Omar Sy, Peter Cullen
Distributor: Paramount Pictures
Rated PG| 149 Minutes
Release Date: June 21, 2017

Transformers: The Last Knight continues the franchise’s long line of large-scale visuals, epic explosions, poorly written scripts, and lack of care for its own continuity. Even after four of these films, the new Transformers installment fails to learn from any of the previous lessons, and instead, chooses to double down (or should I say quadruples down) on them. So let’s not stand on ceremony and just say what we already know: Transformers: The Last Knight is just another two and half hours’ worth of explosion porn fest with a nonsensical script that has plenty of sexual overtones and characters that play to their racial stereotypes. Oh, and let’s not forget all those explosions and shouting matches. Check out my full review below.
