Kevin Bacon to star in Tremors TV show

Twenty-five years ago, long after the Cold War gave us an entire generation of giant monster movies; a crew met out in the middle of the desert (or the town of Perfection, Nevada) to make Tremors. On a budget of about $11 million, director Ron Underwood helped created one of the coolest and most original monster movies in years. A young, fresh out of the awesome 80’s Kevin Bacon played Valentine “Val” McKee, and Fred Ward was his slightly older, slightly wiser partner Earl. Together, they find themselves in the middle of a mess, when giant underground creatures dubbed”Grabboids” with tentacled tongues that pull their victims in swarm the town. With the help of a rag tag crew, including a young pretty seismologist Rhonda (Finn Carter), and married gun nuts Burt and Heather (Michael Gross & Reba McEntire), they defend the town from these creatures, while spouting hilarious one-liners from a script from the duo of S.S. Wilson & Brent Maddox. The movie holds a special place in my heart as well as the hearts of young 80s kids yearning for some fun scares. The special effects hold up and the Grabboids were awesome practical monsters, some of the last before Spielberg changed the game with Jurassic Park in 1993, and CG became the way of the future.

Why are we discussing a quarter century year old classic? Because Tremors, complete with Val himself, is returning to the screen… the small screen.

Black Mass Movie Review

Black Mass
Director: Scott Cooper
Screenwriter: Jez Butterworth, Mark Mallouk
Cast: Johnny Depp, Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, Jesse Plemons, Corey Stoll, Peter Sarsgaard
Warner Bros. Pictures
Rated R | 122 Minutes

Directed by Scott Cooper (Out of the Furnace), Black Mass depicts the true story of James “Whitey” Bulger (Johnny Depp), leader of the notorious Winter Hill Gang.

In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) persuades the Irish-American mobster to work with the FBI to bring down a common enemy: the Italian mob. After making a name for himself through loansharking, bookmaking, and extortion, Bulger would become one of the most dangerous gangsters in history, all with the help of the United States government.

Depp’s Bulger is a fascinating, terrifying individual. With his pallid flesh and icy blue-gray eyes, Whitey is the Count Dracula of South Boston, a creature of the night who preys upon innocence, feeding off the city and sucking it dry.

Last night marked the end for one of television’s most vicious crime dramas, The Following. Last week’s penultimate episode set the stage for one final showdown between Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) and cyber genius serial killer Theo (Michael Ealy). A trade of Theo’s sister Penny (Megalyn Echikunwoke) for Agent Mike Weston (Shawn Ashmore), ended with Penny dead and Theo hot for revenge, with Daisy (Ruth Kearney) very reluctantly at his side. All other bad guys in this season’s cornucopia are now dealt with after the scorned lover/accidental murderer/all around bad FBI agent Tom (Gbenga Akinnagbe) died, as did Mark Gray. Mark’s death hurt, as I was such a huge Sam Underwood fan. He carried two seasons, doubling as twins Luke and Mark, and sometimes splitting their personalities. His death came via gunshot after surprising Mike and Max (Jessica Stroup) but not before leaving Mike a bloody mess. Ryan knows he’s about to be a father. Will he live to see his child born? Will Strauss’s other followers play a significant role? Will the ghost of Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) have one last quiet moment with soulmate Ryan? Time to say goodbye… to The Following.
