Marvel Studios' Black Panther

It’s widely known that the Marvel Studios’ franchises aren’t just tied to one particular genre. Each franchise has a sub-genre that allows it to stand out from other superhero films. For instance, Captain America started out as a wartime period piece and then evolved into a political thriller. Guardians of the Galaxy is a space opera. Iron Man has that buddy cop feel to it. Ant-Man began has a heist film but will become something else in the sequel. And Spider-Man is a coming of age film that sees its titular character go through high school angst.

With Black Panther just a few weeks away from release, we are now beginning to see how director Ryan Coogler‘s film fits into the MCU and how it will distinguish itself from the other MCU films. In a newly released interview, Coogler says he was inspired by films like A Prophet and the James Bond series. Check out the quotes below.

Thor: Ragnarok header image

It’s pretty much safe to say that Thor: Ragnarok will be a game changer, as it not only takes the Thor franchise in a new direction but the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe as well. And a lot of that is thanks in part to Marvel Studios’ president Kevin Feige giving director Taika Waititi the freedom he needed to tell the story that he wanted to tell while also being confined to the rules of the MCU. The sequel is a bombastic thrill ride from start to finish and is finally a Thor movie that everyone can enjoy.

We were recently invited to sit down with our fellow journalists to talk to Feige and Waititi, as well as stars Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie), Cate Blanchett (Hela), Jeff Goldblum (Grandmaster), Karl Urban (Executioner), and Rachel House (Topaz). During the event, we learned about the Taika effect, missing Asgardians, Hulk finally getting some dialogue, what the newcomers have to say about joining the universe, and much more. Read more below about the top ten things we heard at the Thor: Ragnarok press conference.

Thor Ragnarok Valkyrie

While Marvel Studios has paved the way for strong heroines, they still are way behind in getting a female superhero standalone film out. So as fans anxiously await the arrival of Captain Marvel, many other female superheroes are making a case for their own standalone feature and even an all-female Avengers-type film.

Case in point, Tessa Thompson who plays Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok. As Valkyrie, she is a strong fearless warrior who proves to be more than a match for Thor. But she hides a few battle scars that she received from an encounter with Hela (Cate Blanchett).

We were recently invited to sit down with our fellow journalists to talk to the cast of Thor: Ragnarok, where Thompson talked about her role in the film, her response to some of the changes to Valkyrie, and how she rallied her fellow female superheroes and asked Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige for an all-female superhero film. More on the story below.

Marvel Studios Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther

Marvel fans are about to get a double dose of MCU in the coming weeks. First, there’s the D23 Expo, which will be followed by the San Diego Comic-Con next week. So it remains to be seen if they will recycle footage, but considering that next week also happens to be Marvel’s 10th anniversary at SDCC, odds are there will be something special happening to commemorate the event.

So while we wait and see what that is, some new Black Panther coverage has dropped, and it hints at the political instability that is happening at Wakanda since T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) has returned from the events of Captain America: Civil War. If you watched Spider-Man: Homecoming last weekend chances are you may have noticed some very significant differences to the character.
