New Ring Movie Sadako

Back in 1998 the Japanese horror film Ringu, or Ring, was released. It was directed by Hideo Nakata and based on author Koji Suzuki‘s 1991 novel of the same name, which was the first in a series of books. Multiple adaptations of Suzuki’s stories have come and gone over the years, including Ringu 2/Ring 2 (also directed by Nakata) in 1999. The tales inspired an American version, 2002’s The Ring, which was followed by The Ring Two (once again directed by Nakata) in 2005, and Rings in 2017.

Now Nakata is back for another round. The latest entry in the series is titled Sadako—named after the primary antagonist of the series (known to fans here in the States as Samara)—and a trailer for the movie was recently shared. You can find more info and give the trailer a watch below.

Rings, the third installment in the American “Ring” series hits theaters everywhere Friday. Fifteen years ago Gore Verbinski’s The Ring opened, and set off a chain reaction that changed an entire genre. Based on the 1998 Japanese horror film Ringu, directed by Hideo Nakata from the original novel by Koji Suzuki, The Ring terrified viewers here and was a critical and financial success, earning a 72% on Rotten Tomatoes and almost $130 million. That success spawned a whole slew of J-horror knock offs and remakes including The Grudge (2004), Dark Water (2005), Pulse (2006), and the notoriously awful One Missed Call (2008). The sequel, The Ring 2 also came in 2005.

Before we watch Rings Friday, let’s revisit 2002’s The Ring.

King Kong vs. Godzilla! Frankenstein vs. The Wolfman! Freddy vs. Jason! Horror has always managed to take its greatest antagonists and pit them against one another. In 2017 Japan, the battle rages on in Sadako vs Kayako between the two most popular ghosts of the modern J-Horror scene: Sadako, the villainous ghost from Koji Suzuki’s Ring series, and Kayako, the ghost with a grudge from Takashi Shimizu’s Ju-On films. These are the two film series that helped launched J-Horror to the United States signaling a host of remakes, including Gore Verbinski’s adaptation The Ring in 2002 and Shimizu’s own remake The Grudge in 2004. Each of those films were insanely popular, grossing well over $100 million and earning sequels. The third installment of The Ring series, Rings, opens in theaters next week, while Sadako vs Kayako debuts today on Shudder, AMC’s horror streaming service.
