Downloaded Movie PosterDownloaded
Director: Alex Winter
Cast: Shawn Fanning, Sean Parker, Don Lenner, Hilary Rosen, Henry Rollins, Billy Corgan, Lars Ulrich, Trent Reznor
VH1 Rock Docs
Not Rated | 106 Minutes
Release Date: March 10th, 2013 (SXSW)

Directed by Alex Winter (Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Freaked), Downloaded chronicles the evolution of digital media, focusing primarily on the rise and fall of the pioneering peer-to-peer file sharing Internet service Napster.

Featuring exclusive interviews with Napster co-founders Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker, software developers, musicians, and the music industry elite, Downloaded explores the controversial file sharing software and follows Napster’s rise in 1998, through the gauntlet of copyright infringement lawsuits, to its acquisition by Rhapsody in 2011.

Some of those interviewed for Winter’s documentary include Henry Rollins, Billy Corgan, Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, former Sony Music Chairman Don Lenner, former CEO of the RIAA Hilary Rosen, Beastie Boys’ Mike D, and Noel Gallagher of Oasis.

Although there were already networks that facilitated the distribution of files across the Internet, such as IRC, Hotline, and USENET, Napster specialized in MP3 files, a user-friendly interface, and lightning-fast search speeds. At its peak, Napster had about 80 million registered users and revolutionized the music industry for better or for worse.

Flashback: Metallica’s Video For The Traditional Irish Song ‘Whiskey in the Jar’

Metallica Whiskey in the Jar

Any of you out there old enough to remember a time when Metallica proclaimed that they would never make music videos? That was a long time ago, back before they did their first video for the song “One” off their 1988 album …And Justice For All (and what an awesome video it was). Since then, they’ve made plenty more, some of which we probably could have done without (“Until It Sleeps”?).

For St. Patrick’s Day in 1999, Metallica released the music video for their cover of Irish rockers Thin Lizzy’s rendition of the Irish traditional tune “Whiskey in the Jar.” The song was one of 27 tracks off the band’s cover album, Garage Inc., and went on to earn Metallica a Grammy in 2000 for Best Hard Rock Performance. The video for “Whiskey in the Jar” features the members of Metallica — including Jason Newsted on bass — performing as the band at a rowdy all-female house party.

Watch the Metallica “Whiskey in the Jar” video here below.

Metallica Black Album

This week, Metallica‘s Black Album is on sale in MP3 format for only $2.99. The CD is currently $13.25.

Of all Metallica albums, this one is not my favorite, but everyone in the universe loves it, thanks to hits like “Enter Sandman,” and the ballads “The Unforgiven” and “Nothing Else Matters,” but the tracks I really dig are “Wherever I May Roam,” “Through The Never,” and “Of Wolf and Man.” For three bucks, you cannot go wrong with getting this album (it works out to 25 cents each for 12 songs).

Browse all 100 albums on sale this month for only $5 each, as well as several albums on sale this week for only $2.99.

Engines on

Metallica. One of the biggest metal bands on the planet. Surrounded by layers of PR, management, assistants, groupies and crew. Everyone one wants a slice of the four piece from ‘Frisco.

In the bedroom of his West Country home Tom Spicer proudly wears his Metallica t-shirts, collects their music and head-bangs along to it (“Enter Sandman” is his favourite), but Tom is not your average metal head. Tom has Fragile X syndrome, a condition described by his sister Kate Spicer as “autism with bells on.” For the last twenty years Tom has made his dream clear to his family telling them regularly, “Wanna meet Lars, wanna meet Lars.” Lars Ulrich is of course Metallica’s drummer and Mission To Lars, directed by James Moore and Tom’s younger brother Will Spicer, documents the Spicer siblings embarking on a road trip so that Tom can meet his hero.

Watch The Trailer For Metallica Fan Documentary ‘Mission To Lars’

Mission To Lars

Tom Spicer is fanatical about Metallica. During the day he makes animal bedding out of recycled materials, but it is after work that he gets to indulge in his favorite band, in particular verbose drummer Lars Ulrich. For years all Tom has ever wanted is to meet Lars and hence the name of the documentary: Mission To Lars.

What makes this such an interesting looking film is that not only does Spicer live in England – and Lars Ulrich thousands of miles away – but he has Fragile X syndrome, a kind of “autism with bells on” is the description from Tom’s sister in the trailer. But more than just a road movie about a man wanting to meet his hero, Mission To Lars is also a story of sibling love and trying to rekindle that.

Metallica

The Beatles. The Monkees. The Village People. Cinema history is rife with tales of legendary music groups who made an epic stab for celluloid stardom. Many have tried. Some of them failed. Have you ever seen Can’t Stop the Music?

The latest super group to see their future in big screen exploits is Metallica. Having previously starred in the brilliant 2004 documentary Some Kind of Monster the band, which consists of guitarist and lead singer James Hetfield, drummer Lars Ulrich, lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, and bassist Robert Trujillo, have announced that they will hired award-winning filmmaker Nimrod Antal to direct them in an upcoming 3D feature film that will blend narrative filmmaking and concert footage.

Metallica
Metallica – The Black Album
U.S.: CD | MP3
UK: CD | MP3
Recorded October 1990 – June 1991
Released August 13, 1991

At the end of the 1980s, an epic battle was about to take place. Grunge was wafting its sweaty cardigan in the direction of the drainpipe-trousered metallers hoping to lay claim to their throne. One band was not about to concede the new decade to any pretenders and set about writing not only one of the defining albums of the decade, but one of the greatest metal albums of all time. The almighty Black Album arrived, and nobody was going to remove Metallica’s crown.

Officially titled Metallica, it became known as the Black Album thanks to the cover art. It’s black. Released August 13, 1991, it demonstrated a marked change for Metallica. The band’s thrash-heavy, white-hot relentless riffs were replaced by a slower, heavier sound that was less like a machine-gun attack and more like a steady series of hammer blows. On previous albums like …And Justice or All and Master Of Puppets, Metallica showcased their songwriting abilities through epic, challenging musical pieces. This time, however, they went in the opposite direction and kept everything much more simple. The riffs were shorter and catchier and in “Nothing Else Matters” they even have a love song that is actually my favourite track on the album. The galloping riffs of “Through The Never,” “The Struggle Within,” and “Holier Than Thou” prove that Metallica is still the same band. Much of this praise — or blame — was laid at the feet of producer-of-the-moment Bob Rock.

MetallicaI honestly don’t know how to take this news. But here it is… Lars Ulrich, co-founder and drummer of Metallica, the man that fans either love to hate or hate to love or some variation thereof, has been cast in a film. Yep, that’s right; Ulrich is stepping up into acting having been cast in the HBO movie, Hemingway and Gellhorn.

Hemingway and Gellhorn is a biopic being executive produced by James Gandolfini (Mr. Soprano himself!) and directed by Phil Kaufman. The HBO film will focus on the romance and marriage between Ernest Hemingway (portrayed by Clive Owen) and Martha Gellhorn (portrayed by Nicole Kidman). The plot will follow the two through the Spanish Civil War and afterwards.

Also included in the casting are Molly Parker, Parker Posey, and Peter Coyote.
