Unbreakable starring Samuel L. Jackson

When it was announced that Lionsgate would be rebooting Saw based on an original idea from Chris Rock, most laughed at the idea. But the franchise will be bringing back some key players. The original creators of the franchise, James Wan and Leigh Whannell, executive produce alongside Daniel Heffner and Rock. Additionally, Darren Lynn Bousman, who directed Saw II, Saw III, and Saw IV, would be helming. And Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg, who penned the last entry of the Saw franchise, would be writing the script.

Now the reboot, which promises take the horror series to an “intense and twisted new place,” is adding some major star power. According to new reports, Glass and Spider-Man: Far From Home star Samuel L. Jackson will be joining the cast. More on the report below.

Universal Kills Off Connected Dark Universe, Shifts Focus To Individual Monster Projects

Universal Classic Monsters

When it was first announced, a shared universe for rebooted takes on Universal’s classic monsters sounded like it could be fun if all went well. Things did not go well.

The shared universe, which was dubbed the Dark Universe, opened with 2017’s The Mummy starring Tom Cruise. Instead of focusing on the horror, the focus was more on making a CGI-heavy action blockbuster. The movie cost $125 million to produce, and made only $80 million at the domestic box office. A nearly $330 million showing in foreign markets helped to recoup some of those costs, but the Dark Universe was in serious jeopardy of dropping dead a few steps from the starting line.

Now comes word that Universal has indeed killed off the Dark Universe, and will instead shift their focus to rebooting their monsters as individual projects with no ties to a connected universe and, best of all, rooted in horror with no restrictions on the budget, the rating, or the tone.

Upgrade

Leigh Whannell is a well-known name in the horror genre. Not only did he write the nine-minute short film Saw—which spawned the horror franchise of the same name—but he also wrote the first movie in said franchise as well as sequels Saw II and Saw III, and even starred in multiple entries including the original. Whannell also wrote and starred in all four Insidious movies, even stepping in to direct 2015’s Insidious: Chapter 3. He also wrote Dead Silence, and wrote and starred in the horror comedy Cooties to name a couple of others.

Now Whannell is jumping over to the science fiction genre for his latest feature Upgrade. But don’t worry; while this is a sci-fi flick it also includes action, and yes, horror elements for fans to look forward to. The movie comes from Blumhouse Productions, the studio behind Get Out, The Purge series, and much more, who has gone full Christmas releasing both a red band trailer and a green band trailer for their newest title. Cooties Movie Trailer

Very rarely do you see children in zombie movies and TV shows, and even when you do, it’s just one or two of them. With the upcoming movie Cooties, the kids are the only zombies, and they appear to be hungry for more than just a few juicy chicken nuggets.

Anyone who has ever grown up is familiar with the highly contagious but not at all real opposite sex disease, cooties. But in this movie, cooties is real, and it is turning the kids at an elementary school into the vicious and violent undead. The movie stars Elijah Wood, Rainn Wilson, Alison Pill, and comes from the minds of Saw co-creator Leigh Whannell and Glee co-creator Ian Brennan.

Leigh Whannell and Lin Shaye in Insidious

Focus Features and Blumhouse Productions’ Insidious: Chapter 3 takes a trip back in time before the events of the demons that haunted the Lambert family. Leigh Whannell makes his directorial debut replacing James Wan, who left to direct Furious 7.

Having already written and starred in the first two chapters, Whannell seemed like a natural fit to direct the third. However, in our roundtable interview the director revealed that there were some fears about coming on to a sequel that already has a deep mythology and a fanbase. He also talks about some of the difficulties of writing, directing, and acting simultaneously, the use of practical effects over CG, and meeting expectations. Hit the jump for the interview.
