Night Moves (1975) movie review

Night Moves (1975)

– Who’s winning?
– Nobody. One side is just losing slower than the other.

By the time this dialogue occurs you begin to wonder why it took so long for it to be uttered. In 1975 America was striving to overcome the Vietnam War and still reeling from the pungent behavior of those corrupt individuals involved in the deceitful doings of Watergate. The influence of these events were inescapable, thus creating turbulent times all around, especially in cinema.

Night Moves, where the aforementioned quote is from, in particular, directed by Arthur Penn and scripted by Alan Sharp, is a feverish noir that was fully aware of the incessant confusion and mournful distress swallowing up our world at that time, rendering the population hopeless. It’s this kind of cinema, so inextricably tied to its era, that still manages to achieve a sense of timelessness. That’s because of its inquisitive nature to discern truth even if it means losing every now and then.

SNL Star Trek Worf M.D.

During last night’s Saturday Night Live, hosted by Fifty Shades Of Grey star Dakota Johnson, the show paid tribute to the late Star Trek actor Leonard Nimoy, who passed away on Friday.

In a sketch titled “Emergency Room,” Kenan Thompson pays a doctor who gets called into work straight from a Trek convention dressed as Worf, the Klingon security chief from Star Trek: The Next Generation. At the end of the skit, Dr. Worf gives the Vulcan salute — the signal made famous by Nimoy’s Mr. Spock — before the screen showed an image of Nimoy in the original series giving the salute. (While Nimoy was known as part of the original Star Trek series, he did have a notable guest-star spot on TNG.)

Watch the sketch here below, along with other highlight videos from the episode.

Automata Header Image

A trailer and a pair of posters have been released for Automata, an upcoming sci-fi flick starring Antonio Banderas.

The movie is set in the year 2044, at a time when the robots we’ve created have evolved past set protocols—never harm any life form, never alter itself or others—to a point where they’re at the same level of intelligence as humans, and a takeover as the dominant life form on the planet is unfolding. It centers on an insurance agent accident investigator (Banderas) who finds himself caught in the middle of this conflict between human intelligence and artificial intelligence.

While the idea of robots rising up and taking out humans is nothing new, Automata looks pretty darn awesome, like Blade Runner fusing together with a Neill Blomkamp movie, and should appeal greatly to sci-fi fans. You can see the two posters and watch the trailer below.
