sdcc panel photos

While we were in San Diego covering Comic-Con, our hearty team of weather-worn GoDs cranked out more than 60 articles. We were given a personal tour of Crimson Peak by director Guillermo del Toro. We piloted a virtual Jaeger from Pacific Rim. We covered four straight days of film and television panels in Hall H. We published tons of really great comic book news, casting announcements, all manner of awesome reveals, and so much more!

I took so many photos during the Hall H panels I attended at SDCC, that I’ve been updating our panel coverage articles with galleries since Sunday afternoon. And I’ve only now just finished processing my final lot of panel photos.

Below are nearly 400 additional panel photos that were taken over the course of my four days in Hall H, including Kingsman: The Secret Service with Colin Firth; the EW Women Who Kick Ass panel; The Maze Runner, the newest film in the Hitman franchise Agent 47; Michael Mann’s Blackhat with Chris Helmsworth; Let’s Be Cops; the newest stop-motion masterpiece from Laika, The Box Trolls; Paris-sewer found-footage horror, As Above So Below; Salma Hayek’s ‘The Raid,’ Everly; and an animated film that was completely off my radar pre-SDCC, but which I am now extremely looking forward to, The Book of Life.

HBO's Luck

Michael Mann and horse racing. A pair not often uttered in the same breath.

However, HBO is hoping to change that with Mann’s upcoming TV series, Luck. Starring Nick Nolte and Dustin Hoffman, the new series is set to hit TV sets in 2012, and in light of its impending debut, the network has released a brief, but fantastic, teaser for the hotly anticipated series.

Movie Review: Public Enemies

BAADASSSSS!   |

Public Enemies movie posterPublic Enemies
Directed by Michael Mann
Starring Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Marion Cotillard, Channing Tatum
Rated R
Release date: July 1, 2009

Michael Mann is one of our best modern masters when it comes to weaving elaborate and starkly realistic cinematic tales of cops and criminals. There is very little black and white in his world. The characters in Mann’s crime dramas who work on opposite sides of the law are always portrayed as equals, and often as shadows of one another. Instead of the musty pulp novels, mildewed comic books, and scratchy 16mm film prints that fuel the imagination of Quentin Tarantino, another filmmaker well versed in making virtuoso action films, Mann, like fellow filmmaking contemporary Martin Scorsese, finds his inspiration in the real-life exploits of the modern day outlaws and the law enforcement officials sworn to bring them in.

His big-screen crime stories (and the various classic television series he has been partly or fully responsible for, such as Miami Vice and Crime Story) are powered by an engine of ruthless intelligence and feelings of isolation and loneliness. In his films you could tell Mann’s sympathies often resided with the criminals instead of the police, who were usually portrayed as being ready and able to go beyond the limits of the law to nab their quarry, but Mann could not be accused of glorifying the criminal lifestyle. His thieves and assassins were coolly professional in their work but emotionally distant from the rest of the world. They had the world at their feet but never chanced enjoying the ill-gotten fruits of their labor for fear of breaking the carefully constructed code that reduced their risk of being arrested by the authorities or even cut down in a hail of gunfire. We liked them for who they were even if we could not condone what they did. Mann did not judge either. He just showed things for how they could be. At the end of his crime stories his criminal anti-heroes usually ended up dead or alone as a result of venturing outside their own limits to have a taste of life, and most importantly love.

Public EnemiesThe first two official images from Michael Mann‘s gangster flick, Public Enemies have been released.

The pictures are of the stars of the film, Johnny Depp as John Dillinger and Christian Bale as FBI agent Melvin Purvis, who’s on Dillinger’s trail.

The movie is scheduled for a July 3, 2009 release and also stars Marion Cotillard, Giovanni Ribisi, David Wenham, and Billy Crudup.

I can’t say there’s much about this a movie fan shouldn’t be excited for — Michael Mann, gangsters, Johnny Depp, and Christian Bale… it’s all good stuff here. But it’s good to see some pictures and I’m definitely looking forward to a trailer.
