Monsters: Dark Continent Image

Recently a trailer was released for Monsters: Dark Continent, a sequel to Godzilla director Gareth Edwards’ 2010 indie flick Monsters. Did you know they were making a sequel to Monsters? Neither did I!

Godzilla is doing big things at the box office—so big that a sequel is already in the works—and Monsters of course played a huge part in scoring Edwards that gig. The movie grossed over $4 million worldwide on only a $500,000 budget. Godzilla cost much more at an estimated $160 million, but has already grossed $193 million worldwide in one weekend.

You can check out the first trailer for Monsters: Dark Continent below now.

Monsters

Gareth EdwardsMonsters was an unsuspected hit in 2010, and because of its success, Legendary Pictures hired him to helm the reboot of Godzilla. The low budget film features some awesome set pieces and spectacular visuals that looked so real, you thought the it’d ran a huge tab. Of course since the film was a hit, talks of a sequel swirled.

But even after the success of the film died down, those talks of a developing a sequel went with it. Until now. According to Screendaily (via The Playlist) Tom Green has been hired to direct the sequel to Monsters; Monsters: The Dark Continent.

New ‘Godzilla’ To Be Helmed By ‘Monsters’ Director Gareth Edwards

Director Gareth Edwards made quite the climb into the public eye in 2010, and he’s beginning 2011 off in epic fashion.

Edwards is know for making the indie alien invasion film, Monsters, which was produced with only a few people on the cast and crew, and with a tiny budget (though bigger than what was once said to be only around $15,000). The movie made the festival rounds and caught a lot of attention for its look and special effects on such a minuscule budget, and now Edwards is getting major attention from bigger studios.

It’s being reported that Edwards is set to lock up a deal with Legendary Pictures, the banner behind The Dark Knight, 300, and Inception, to direct their brand new re-imagining of classic movie beast, Godzilla. Legendary acquired the rights to the famed Japanese creature in 2010 and has since been putting things together with hopes of releasing their movie at some point in 2012. The hiring of Edwards is the first major ingredient, sure to be followed quickly with a writer and various castings.

A new United States poster for Gareth Edwards‘ upcoming independent creature movie, Monsters, has been released online.

The movie tells the story of a journalist who needs to find his boss’s daughter and bring her home, which requires navigation through a quarantined zone in Central America where alien creatures crash-landed within a NASA probe six years prior and have evolved into incredible and dangerous beings that both the American and Mexican military forces struggle to find a way to contain.

We recently shared with you a trailer and clip from the movie (Read: Watch Now: ‘Monsters’ Trailer & Clip Offer ‘District 9′ Vibes ), which is said to have only had a budget of around $15,000, give or take. The movie is set to premiere in limited release on October 29, 2010.

Watch Now: ‘Monsters’ Trailer & Clip Offer ‘District 9’ Vibes

My favorite movies when it comes to pre-release hype are those little films that make a lot of noise on the festival circuit or have an entertaining viral marketing campaign behind them. Monsters is a movie like that.

The movie is directed by Gareth Edwards, a relative newcomer with a few unknown titles under his belt supported by some visual effect work. It tells the story of a time when life has been discovered in other parts of the universe and a probe has been sent out to collect samples. The probe crashes in Central America on its way back in, and new lifeforms begin emerging and growing rapidly.

Click on over to the other side to check out a clip from the movie and a new trailer!
