For 15 years, one computer-animation studio dominated Hollywood with 11 major hit films, earning awards a plenty and worldwide critical acclaim for its output. Then came Cars 2. And Brave. Lest we forget Monsters University (which I actually found entertaining) and an entire year (2014) with no feature films. Pixar was a powerhouse, but now its corporate owner (Disney) has an unbeatable animation studio of its own. The question we all continue to wonder is if Pixar can reclaim its title as an unstoppable force.

Disney In Depth previews the recent past and future of Pixar, hoping to determine if John Lasseter‘s computer-animation studio can finally be able to dismiss naysayers, once and for all, that its hit streak was a one-time experience.

What an odd and oddly-wonderful Oscars. As the 86th Academy Awards winds down, we reflect on the shocking wins, disappointing losses, and memorably unusual moments. But here we focus on the Disney elements, whether prominent or more subtle, that persisted throughout the show.

Frozen thawed the cooler hearts of some voters, scoring it two wins. And the other Disney nominees? Not so lucky. Yet the influence of the Mouse could be felt throughout the theatre. Let’s analyze Disney at the Oscars 2014.

Monsters University Party Central Short Header

Originally, the Monsters University short film Party Central was supposed to be shown in front of Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur. However, with that film being bumped to 2015, Disney was forced to shift the short to appear in front Muppets Most Wanted showings. This isn’t the first time that a Pixar-related short has appeared in front of a Muppet film. Back in 2011, the Toy Story short Small Fry appeared before showings of The Muppets.

So now that Disney has figured out when they will release this short, they now have debuted a clip to get audiences excited for another adventure with Mike and Sulley. Hit the jump to see the video.

Disney In Depth: Analyzing Disney’s 2013 Box Office Records

The Walt Disney Studios has once again impressed Hollywood with the news that it has topped the $4 billion mark (worldwide) for the first time ever. 2013 saw the releases of numerous tentpole pictures under the Disney brand, including films from Marvel and Pixar. But is this strategy, which appears almost go-big-or-go-home at times, positive?

The numbers tell a story, but so do the quality of the pictures. In many ways Disney beat other studios that suffered from major financial failures (most notably, Sony, which saw disappointing figures for many of its summer releases). But even with one box office bomb (sorry, The Lone Ranger), Disney made major strides. Let us explore what worked, and what could be improved in the future.

It’s time to scare it up, my fellow geeks! Monsters University sees its home release, and surprisingly, the Blu-ray edition of Pixar’s latest feature is wicked good. Explore Monsters University with me, shall we?

James P. Sullivan (John Goodman) and Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) may have given the impression they were always best buddies in Monsters, Inc., but Monsters University proves just the opposite. Travel back in time with Sulley and Mikey to their young adulthood, when Sulley’s pomposity and Mike’s unabashed idealism contrasted with their older personalities. Mike craves to scare for a living, despite his less-than-menacing appearance, and must prove to naysayers that he belongs at the Scare School. He works ceaselessly to understand ways to haunt and chill. Sulley, on the other hand, thinks his family name and reputation will lead him on a road to success, but his egotism impairs his image and potential. The two must collaborate with the non-impressive Oozma Kappa fraternity to save their spots in the Scare School.

D23 Expo: Monsters University: Party Central banner

A new Monsters University short, titled Party Central, was shown today at the Animation panel at this year’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, CA, and was met with a favorable response from the crowd.

Party Central, which will premiere in theaters in front of Disney/Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur in 2014, is ridiculously funny. We were shown the entirety of the short, which finds the Oozma Kappa gang sad that nobody came to their party. But Mike and Sulley bring the fun to their house – literally. Through the magic of carefully-arranged doors and some creativity, the pair share the fun atmosphere with everyone.

Extremely witty and smart, I have no doubt audiences will fall in love with this short. The crowd at D23 loved it!

Monsters University entered theaters as a smashing success, garnering a fresh Rotten Tomatoes rating – albeit not as high as most previous Pixar entries – and even earned a cool $82 million weekend opening (up to almost $160 million at last check). But what contributed to Monsters operating in such fine fashion?

Here are 13 very lucky reasons I believe worked collectively in making Monsters University score high marks.
